90% deposit for windows, covered by The Home Improvement Protection Scheme
Hi, We have had a quote for double glazing supply and fit, the supplier requires 90% payment up front, but have said we are protected by The Home Improvement Protection Scheme (HIP). I can only find two reviews of HIP (Google Reviews) both of which say "don't touch with a bargepole". The window company themselves seem…

Kinnetic Light Switch
Hello, I had a kinnetic light switch when I moved into my house. This controlled the landing light. However, there were 2 other wired switches which controlled this light. When decorating, the decorator lost the light switch and we thought nothing of it. When we tried to use the light using the other light switches, the…

How to remove shiny cover on self-adhesive mirror
I bought a roll of self-adhesive
wall mirror sheet from B&Q. One side has yellow paper which is easy to peel
off revealing the adhesive side. The other has a shiny blue covering but I can’t
find an edge to grab to pull and reveal the mirror (it arrived without instructions).
Any useful ideas please? Thank you

Restoring the staircase
Hi, at home the only place where I still have carpets is the staircase(s, unfortunately on both flights). It *must* go. If the stairs have been painted white at the sides (that seems to have been incredibly common in the past) how easy it is to remove the white and show the plain wood surface? would it go away with some…

Boiler lost pressure again - help!
I need some advice on what to do next. I've got a main elite combi boiler, 7 years old and serviced every year since installation. I noticed it was losing pressure at the end of Feb this year and called in the plumbing and heating firm we've always used. The conclusion they eventually reached after 3 visits was it wasn't a…

Can I fit additional brackets to my boiler flue myself?
Hi, My boiler flue goes up vertically through my loft and then up through the roof. I have recently been told that the flue is not adequately supported in the loft and needs additional supporting brackets attaching to studs in the loft. Adhering to thermal requirements when re-rendering
Hello, The rear of my terraced property is rendered and it was in very poor condition and causing damp. I’ve had it all hacked off and just letting the brick dry out while I decide to do what next! Property was built about 1900 / 1910 and is brick. I am not staying for long and just want to sell in the next year or so. As…

Genuine Question - Why are many Tradespeople (in my experience) apparently so unreliable?
Hi there. I am trying to be as careful as I can to avoid sweeping statements but over the last decade or so, I can think of only a handful of tradespeople that I have used that have never let me down. Just to be clear - I have never had any bad work done, I have just had loads of incidents whereby people have said they are…

Leak from property above - leasehold flat
I have a ground floor property and there is a leak coming from above. There is one property above me and one more above that. I am pretty sure the leak is coming from the property above as a neighbour told me they had plumbing issues for some time and are not quick to get things fixed whenever there is something wrong…

Leaking door threshold
Would be grateful for any advice. Had a new door fitted about 2 years ago. The fitter was back early on to seal what seemed to be a couple of leaks. All settled fine until about 6 months later when there was a smell. Lifted the carpet and the floor was wet. Hadn't had various damp proof people etc and no one could work it…

Anyone know about Aerial Boosters?
4 years ago we had a loft aerial and booster fitted in our new house. There's no power in our loft so an 8 room splitter was fitted in the loft but the booster was installed behind my main TV amplifying the signal back up the aerial. This all worked fine for 4 years until I had the bright idea of moving the booster to a…

Washing Machine - Suitable location/plumbing
Hi all, Recently just purchased and moved into a new house. We're looking at getting a washing machine plumbed in either via currys or a local company etc to do all the fitting. We'd also ideally like a dishwasher. I'm aware for the cupboard under the stairs there possibly used to be a washing machine here, due to the…

Kitchen refit on a budget
Hi, I discovered who the manufacturers are for the likes of Wren and Howdon's. This will usually be a factory on an industrial site. I was told to go there by my builder. The company were only too happy to help and took my order. They showed me round the factory and I could see the colours and finish on the units. I had to…

Replacing sloping path
We are in the process of breaking up the old concrete path to our front door. It’s on a slope so there’s a step up from the road and a further wide step before the door, then a step into the house. It has to go as it’s cracked and has moved slightly over the 80 or 90 years it’s been in place, and there’s a tree root…
