Who is responsible for a shared rainwater drain for terraced houses?
I share a single down pipe and drain with 2 neighbours (I’m in the middle) for the rainwater collected in our respective gutters at the front of our terrace. We believe it connects to the sewer in the road. The down pipe and drain sit between mine and “Fred’s” houses. “Paul’s” gutter feeds into them. Fred and I have…

Help with a drainage issue?
I'm after some advice on a drainage issue we're currently suffering. I've knocked up the below plan to try and help explain things: (Downpipes are in blue, as is the land drain in front of the garages. The land drain discharges into the green below-ground line, which connects below-ground to the neighbour's rear left-hand…

New washing machine
My last washing machine lasted just over 10 years and I did not bother registering it. I had a water leak 18 months ago and found out on Youtube what part was needed, I bought a pattern part and fitted it myself, machine lasted another 18 months before a different electronic fault occurred and would not work. I bought a…

Worcester Bosch engineer
Recently had a service on my two year old boiler - identified a slight issue with the valve filter not shutting off properly - arranged as part of warranty for this to be repaired by Worcester Bosch and an engineer came out today - took a look and said as he would need to stand on my worktop to access what he needed, and…

Scaffold damage
Hi all, just looking for some advice please. We had scaffolding erected for some work on our house. When they took it down, a pole was dropped right through our plastic conservatory roof. It has 12 panels and is 15+ years old but fine. The guy they sent to look at it said a replacement will stick out like a sore thumb…

Repai a crack in thin exterior render.
Can anyone tell me what to use to stabilise this crack in the render on the front of my house .. The render is quite thin at around a few mm and not too sure what to use - in case I make it worse. I was hoping to find something which would go off white ( or off white ) to save me painting the front of the house .

This filling loop is connected 'incorrectly'?
Not mine, and I don't think a biggie issue either, but I'm trying to trace pipes for someone, and started at their Vaillant EcoTec pro 28 boiler - I'm guessing around 6-odd years old. First head-scratch - surely the CH Return is the RH pipe, and that's where - conventionally - the filling loop should be connected to? This…

Any chance to build a driveway or parking
Hi I have a property which doesn't have any parking. The property attached a conservatory in the front garden. Is there any chance to convert the conservatory into driveway, garage or carport? Thanks everyone for the advice.

Loft Conditions
I was wondering if anyone had experience of this. I have got a lot of boxes I want to store in an (unconverted) loft. I am concerned about moisture and mould. Airtight plastic containers would be best I realise. But I have a lot, and good quality containers are going to cost an awful lot. My Question is; Would wrapping…

Water is pooling in the corners of my bath. Anything that can be done?
Hi all I recently had a new bath fitted (bathroom renovation). Everything is tiled in, completed but unfortunately I noticed after that water pools in these corners and won't drain unless I do it myself. Anything that can be done? It's an L-Shaped Bath and I've heard this can be an issue so unsure if it's the bath or the…

patio door opening regulation
Hello, We have just had patio doors replaced and the opening is several inches less than the doors they replaced (23 1/2" from 28"). I consider thus to be too small an opening and , when we had our sifas removed, immediatly after fitting, the sofas had to be broken down to get them out. The 'fully open' measurement was not…

Carpenter won't give me an itemised receipt
I had 6 doors fitted by a husband and wife carpentry company local to me. Communication has been dire throughout due to continued excuses about someone being ill or the kids keeping them busy. I was desperate to get the job done though after struggling to find someone to even give me a quote! Eventually they did the job…

Wood burner squeeking flue when windy
Hello, we have a rather annoying squeeking sound coming from the wood burner flue. The source of the sound seems like it's coming from around a foot or two above the ceiling. The flue then goes up through the bedroom (boxed in corner) and out the roof. I've a quote for: -£680+vat to fit 2 x bracket in the room above and…

Extension vs conservatory with a guardian roof
Hi, i am currently considering expanding my detached home and torn between an extension or opting for an outbuilding with a Guardian roof (Edwardarwin style). This building will essentially attach to my kitchen and I will remove my current french doors so it will be a straight walk through, The extension would be ideal but…

Wooden Board Effect Vinyl Flooring very slightly off straight
Quick question to see if I'm being a bit OCD about something, I've had vinyl flooring fitted into a bathroom and the effect on it is wooden boards which run down from the entrance to the bathroom to the back. I can see that this is not completely straight in terms of the board pattern running parallel to the side walls and…

Loo Cistern overflow adjustment
Hi all, The water is flowing into the overflow pipe. I'm told the float should be an inch below it but I've tried adjusting the small cog wheel at the bottom of the pic in both directions and it's having no effect. Any ideas? Many thanks!
