Qettle water boiler/filter leak after mains water off

We’ve got a Qettle boiling water tap with the 4 litre boiler and an inline charcoal filter (about the size of a rolling pin) under our kitchen sink.  Our mains water has been off for about 5 hours due to a burst main locally. When it came back on earlier we heard a couple of knocks from under the sink (sounded like the braided hoses against the inside of the cupboard - sometimes does this when the boiler tank is refilling)

an hour later there was water that had leaked from somewhere around either the boiler or filter, not loads but probably a couple of litres worth. It wasn’t hot.

any idea where this could of come from? Have cleared it up and no obvious signs of a leak, wasn’t sure if the mains coming back on may of caused it from one part of the Qettle under sink components?

I suppose it's possible that water was forced out momentarily when the mains came back, but it seems unlikely.

You say that the flexible hose knocks against the cabinet, so it must be moving.  Any chance the connection has worked slightly loose?

Flexible pipes do degrade over time, especially if there is any movement. Had to replace one on DN's toilet cistern recently.. Working life for flexible pipes drop as temperatures increase - Many of them are only rated for 85-90°C maximum. Although, at the price Quooker charge for their products, one would hope the hoses are rated much higher.

If mains pressure was higher after the burst is it possible that was enough to cause seepage from one or more of the joints?
  • thanks everyone.  It was due a filter change and deep clean so I did this yesterday and checked all fittings and tested OK.  Think I panicked a little Saturday evening when I saw the water.

    thanks again

We've had exactly the same thing happen twice to us now - the pressure being turned back on knocked the filter out of its holder a little bit and caused a leak. After the second time, I've reduced the pressure of the water flow to the Qettle but have no way of really testing it. I'm still wary enough that we'll probably turn it off completely when we next go on holiday.

Your post of this happening to you makes me thing this is an inherent design flaw in the filter cartridge fitment.
  • Hi, we have had problems with leaks on our Qettle 4 litre. We had the first one for just over 18 months before noticing water in the tray, so reported it to Qettle who sent out a free replacement boiler. Within 2 months we saw the same problem, so complained again and Qettle arranged for another unit to be sent out and also an engineer to come and install it. He took the two faulty units back with him and said they would investigate the problem. After a further two months we are seeing water again coming from the third unit, so will be contacting Qettle again come January. The engineer said it might be to do with increased water pressure during the night when usage is low, but I would have thought that this would have been allowed for in the design. We cannot fault the service from Qettle but are very frustrated by the problems we have had. Has anyone else heard of problems like this caused by night-time water pressure??

Do any of you know what your mains water pressure actually is? Do any of you have a PRV fitted in order to reduce the mains to an acceptable and less shocking ~3bar?
