Hi, I’m looking for some advice regarding mono blocking a small grass strip across attached to my driveway. I have spoken to the council and they have advised me, they don’t own that piece of land, instead i was advised to contact factor who then replied, i can’t despite there are no access to mains, hatches or manholes in…

How do you keep humidity under 70% in the UK?
Alright so I have recently became a home owner. The house I bought was built in the 90s. It has brand new doors and windows installed by the previous owner in 2014, I insulated loft up to 300mm, blocked off fireplace (leaving a tiny vent as advised by the chimney sweep), and did few other things which really helped with…

Annual Boiler Service/Emergency Cover
Hi. We had a new boiler installed in 2023. My house insurance policy has the extra home emergency cover should anything break, but does not include annual service. Is it better to pay as a one off for an annual check, or to take out another pay monthly jobby with i.e. British Gas, which I guess includes an annual service?

Replacing garage door with brick wall and uPVC door
Our garage door is needing replacement, but we are now considering removing the door and having a 'normal' sized door put in and the remaining section of wall either fully bricked up or partly bricked and with a window put in. Before we get carried away with this idea - is this permitted development or do we need planning…

Replacing drain inspection cover
Hi, i moved into this house a few months ago and i think the previous owner must have gone over this inspection drain cover with a petrol mower or something. I want to replace it and have found this which looks similar but seems expensive for some plastic:…

Countertop dishwashers
Hi. Does anyone have any experience of countertop dishwashers, especially ones with a water tank that don’t need to be plumbed in? How well do they actually work? I am getting a bit ground down by the constant washing up and was wondering if something like this would suit me? Any recommendations? Yay or nay? Thanks in…

Shared ownership maintenance costs
I am a shared owner with a large housing association. We had a notice saying that they were going to redecorate communal areas. The majority of flats are housing association/ council so will not be directly paying towards these works I assume. The letter said they had a figure of £70,000 for the work, and that my share…

Laying LVT click flooring
I want to lay some LVT click flooring in the kitchen of an old Victorian property, and I need advice on how level the floor needs to be, please. It's a wooden floor. Fairly ropey! I'll lay thin plywood on top of the floor, but I'm concerned that the underlying floor joists are not level. I assume that the plywood will…

Building regulations for suspended floor insulation
So firstly I know there are a couple of tangents here....one is that the only definitive answer I can get is from my local Building Control office. Unfortunately there is no way of phoning them to have a quick chat - they want queries submitted online with details and photos etc. The second tangent is that if I got…

Damaged Honeywell programmable thermostat
My thermostat is damaged and needs replacing. This might be a stupid question, but if I just buy a new one, will it just work or does it need to be linked to the combi boiler somehow? If so, can a layperson do it, or do I need a heating engineer? The model is Honeywell T3R. Thanks.

Choosing a Duvet
Treating ourselves to new bedding. Rather than a cheap duvet we're looking at getting a decent one. There are some must not's..... Can't be Feather. It sets my asthma off. Can't be Polyester as I will simply sweat lots. So far all I've come up with is the John Lewis Synthetic active anti allergy duvet. Happy to spend £100,…

Bathroom Ceiling about to fall down
I've got a serious problem with my bathroom ceiling. Its now sagging quite a bit, with a massive crack. There are some brown water marks which I think indicate water damage. Above me is another flat and their bathroom. I've been informed my pipes run underneath the floor, so it has to be the bathroom above. I'm not sure…

Re-felting shed roof
My wooden shed is leaking in at the roof now so it's going to need re-felting. I understand there's differing felts so what specific felt am I looking at for this, bearing in mind that I'm a DIY donkey, probably going to mess it up & so don't want to be doing it again for as long as possible? The shed roof is triangular. I…

Hi Thanks to everyone who commented and gave me ideas on my stairs thread. I now have a plan that I think will work. The stairs will finish in the same place and the front right bedroom will change from being 3 x 3m to 2 x 4m (approx), so not loosing to much. I have attached images of current and proposed plan and also the…

Foam insulation removal.
Not sure if anyone can advise. I had open cell foam insulation added to my loft in 2021 by Cisco Homes (now defunct). My home is a 3 bedroomed dormer style property built in the 1970s. Obviously, at the time, the good ol' government had given it green credentials. Now, I have been approached by EPC Hub and have had a visit…

Worcester Bosch guarantee
I have an issue with my Greenstar 30i combi which means that I cannot get any hot water as the boiler was heating up to 98'. It was installed through a Government grant in 2021. Eon-the installers-gave me a warranty of 2 yrs and on the WB website the appliance has a warranty until 2028. How-ever, I was told by WB that as I…

Garden Patio: Re-lay existing vs replace for new
I've got a fairly small patio at home which over the years has gone very lumpy (sunken slabs, pointing fallen out etc). I am looking at having it re-laid and re-pointed, and a local guy says he can do this, around 60% of the slabs need re-lifting, cleaning up and re-laying, the rest can stay as they are. The old slabs are…
