Problem with electric Velux window after < 2 years
We had an electric Velux roof window fitted less than 2 years ago. Since last week it started making a clunking sound when we tried to open it (it sounded a bit like a clutch slipping on a motor), and it opens much more slowly. I've uploaded a video of the problem here: https://youtu.be/Xi-pbDL2ZpE When we bought the…

Eggshell paint?
I prefer to use Satinwood or Silk paint instead of gloss for interior woodwork. Looking around I am wondering what is the difference between using these paints or using "Eggshell"? Is Eggshell less shiny or not for use as a top coat etc.

AWOL neighbour
My neighbour is a single male in his 50s , he used to work from home as an accountant so paperwork would be dropped off and collected, he didn't actually have a place of work, about 4 years ago an elderly relative of his passed away and left him a house elsewhere . I've got no reason to think this isn't the case. We live…

Stairwell carpet stinks after being shampoo'd with machine.
I have a RugDoctor machine, after I got it a few months ago I shampoo'd the whole flat and the only smell I noticed was on the stairwell/front door area which was a smelly feet smell, I did it again a week later and the smell was still there but not as bad and went away after a few weeks. I decided to do it again as…

Brick Repointing. Ask to be redone or fussy?
Hi, As the title says, I got a small bit of repointing done last week. It's still not fully dry other than the bottom parts, but I'm tempted to ask them to take another look. I know you'll never get a perfect match, but the colour is more of a buff to me than grey. Am I being unreasonable to do so? Thanks!

Help identifying curtain rail fixings
I need to find some replacement fixings for a curtain rail in a bay window. The track itself is OK but the brackets have failed so I'd like to find some replacements if anyone recognises them? If it helps in identification I can tell you that they attach in my case to a plastic thing that slides on a metal bracket as shown…

Any tips on how to loosen this concrete?
This gorgeous and desirable 😕 part of my access had these 3 block pavers missing when I moved in 7yrs ago. I've tried various concretes that were in my shed but they just fall off again eventually no matter how much preparation I do. Now I've bought some adhesive but can't chip off the old concrete to get it level which is…

Who is responsible for a shared rainwater drain for terraced houses?
I share a single down pipe and drain with 2 neighbours (I’m in the middle) for the rainwater collected in our respective gutters at the front of our terrace. We believe it connects to the sewer in the road. The down pipe and drain sit between mine and “Fred’s” houses. “Paul’s” gutter feeds into them. Fred and I have…

Help with a drainage issue?
I'm after some advice on a drainage issue we're currently suffering. I've knocked up the below plan to try and help explain things: (Downpipes are in blue, as is the land drain in front of the garages. The land drain discharges into the green below-ground line, which connects below-ground to the neighbour's rear left-hand…

New washing machine
My last washing machine lasted just over 10 years and I did not bother registering it. I had a water leak 18 months ago and found out on Youtube what part was needed, I bought a pattern part and fitted it myself, machine lasted another 18 months before a different electronic fault occurred and would not work. I bought a…

Worcester Bosch engineer
Recently had a service on my two year old boiler - identified a slight issue with the valve filter not shutting off properly - arranged as part of warranty for this to be repaired by Worcester Bosch and an engineer came out today - took a look and said as he would need to stand on my worktop to access what he needed, and…

Scaffold damage
Hi all, just looking for some advice please. We had scaffolding erected for some work on our house. When they took it down, a pole was dropped right through our plastic conservatory roof. It has 12 panels and is 15+ years old but fine. The guy they sent to look at it said a replacement will stick out like a sore thumb…

Repai a crack in thin exterior render.
Can anyone tell me what to use to stabilise this crack in the render on the front of my house .. The render is quite thin at around a few mm and not too sure what to use - in case I make it worse. I was hoping to find something which would go off white ( or off white ) to save me painting the front of the house .

This filling loop is connected 'incorrectly'?
Not mine, and I don't think a biggie issue either, but I'm trying to trace pipes for someone, and started at their Vaillant EcoTec pro 28 boiler - I'm guessing around 6-odd years old. First head-scratch - surely the CH Return is the RH pipe, and that's where - conventionally - the filling loop should be connected to? This…

Loft Conditions
I was wondering if anyone had experience of this. I have got a lot of boxes I want to store in an (unconverted) loft. I am concerned about moisture and mould. Airtight plastic containers would be best I realise. But I have a lot, and good quality containers are going to cost an awful lot. My Question is; Would wrapping…
