Painting - cutting in with no 'hard line'!
Bit if an odd one this, which I'm clearly overthinking.. Currently the inside of my front door is white and the ceiling is also white. Where the two meet is sort of a small curve (think a wide thumb having used caulk or similar - not something deliberate!). The inside of the door will soon be a strong dark colour, but with…

Getting frame sealant into an inaccessible gap
Is there a clever way to get frame sealant into a narrow gap at the base of a conservatory? The gap is between the bottom of the frame and a sill that runs all the way along the outside of the base (see diagram). There is very little clearance between the sill and the ground beneath, so there's no way to get a sealant…

Simple plans for small extensiom
Morning all Would be grateful for any help/pointers as we’ve never done this sort of thing before. We are thinking about a very small, single storey extension to the rear of the house. At the moment, there is a conservatory which has seen better days. At some point, it will need to come down so we thought we’d pre-empt…

Radiators not piping hot last year
Last year in winter; I noticed my radiators were not piping hot when the central heating was on. Therefore I maxed out the thermostat and left it all day. Still the radiators were only warm. I called a boiler engineer who has advised replacing the boiler. I currently have a Potterton Powermax 85HE CP. I believe it was…

Building a Patio With Retaining Wall - Run Off/Fall
Hi there, We are building a patio against the back of the house and are trying to get our heads around the best way to build the side retaining wall. The intention was to fill the retaining wall with compacted hardcore, so that it lies flush with the wall, then lay the slabs on top of the whole thing. The question is,…

Electric heater recommendations
Hi all, My MIL is feeling the cold very badly and the coal fire the house has isn't doing much to keep her warm. She know the coal fire needs to be replaced, however, she has suffered a number of bereavements and so getting it replaced is not really something she's able to do. We live 300 miles from her so we are limited…

Whats the best way to remove a sweat stain from a shirt collar? The shirt in questions is a polyester and cotton mix from M&S. Not sure how long the stain has been there, but its both sides of the collar. I have washed and dried the shirt multiple times, hoping its not a permanent stain. Photo attached. Thanks.

Is this a leak or damp?
Firstly, I'm quite clueless about DIY/home matters - I've had marks on part of the main room ceiling in my top floor flat (with a loft above) for a month or so, but they've particularly worsened over the last week. There's no water coming in through the ceiling but the brown marks are a bit colder to the touch than the…

Council have asked for walls to be prepared...
We live in a council house and recently had a counter top shorted to fit in a larger cooker. During the work, an electrician told us we'd have to have the cooker switch moved as it should never have been above the cooker area in the first place. We spoke to a Housing Inspector who told us that wouldn't be an issue but we'd…

Inherited an old shed
Hi there, I'm hoping for some advice from those who know far more than me about sheds. I've just moved into a bungalow that has been empty for a couple of years and have inherited a small shed and I'm wondering whether it's worth repairing or to be honest 'bodging up' to get a few more years out of it and until I can…

Harvey water softner
I have already have a water softener in my attic, it was done by the previous owner. Harvey said they can install it over there, or they can install under the staircase, which is... Fence Installation Costs UK: DIY or Professional?
Hi all, Has anyone in the UK had new fences put up recently? We’re looking at four standard 6' x 3' panels – nothing too fancy, as we’ll add lighting/plants later on. I was thinking of ordering the panels online and fitting them myself, but my partner feels it would be safer to hire someone to supply and install. Roughly…
