Sink distance from Electric Hob
Hi The builders who are installing our kitchen have moved a sink location from the original design without informing us, because they said it would provide more counter space. Whilst true the sink is now very close to the electric hob and oven.....is it safe to do this? Its only about 30cm from the edge of sink to the edge…

Where to buy kitchen units?
I want to renew a small kitchen. I only need 3 base units and 2 wall units. Plus some worktop. Where's a good place to pick this up flat-pack, off the shelf? I costed this out at Wickes, and it comes to £1000. I did the same at DIY kitchens, and it's similar. I was, naively, expecting more like £50-100 per unit, but the…

House treated by wood specialists and now unliveable due to the chemical smell
Woodworm specialist companies recommended spraying all of the floorboards in my house. A week after it was done, there’s a really strong pesticide smell in the house. I’m not sure what to do about this. I have since read about the treatment and I regret not having read more before agreeing to it as I now feel the chemical…

BARB pop up on TV
Hello. I switched on my TV just now, nothing on as per but noticed Titanic on Channel 4. A pop up appeared from BARB saying they were monitoring what I was watching, I couldn't get to read the rest of the text before it disappeared. Has anyone else had this?

Video Doorbell (Eufy 340) using existing doorbell
my background isn't electrical but wondered if my existing doorbell would provide sufficient power for my new Video Doorbell or whether I would need to replace it for a transformer. Thanks in advance.

Replacement for Hot Water System
I live in an all electric flat. Our water is heated using Pulsacoil 2000, a heat exchanger, running on Economy 7, which gave more than enough hot water running for 3 hours overnight (two showers - one long - washing up etc). Unfortunately the cyclinder has split (but not leaking very much as far as I can see, downstairs…

Planning objection help
Apologies if this is the wrong place. I would welcome experience of others. In short the office block nearby wants to adapt the building to make it lab-space ready. The adaptations - erection of a substation, numerous DX Units, roof and ground floor ventilation and emission infrastructure suggest (there is a lack of detail…

Fly tipped waste including asbestos on unadopted passageway
Hello I recently discovered some fly tipped waste which includes a sheet of asbestos in the passageway running behind a row of houses. I reported it to the borough council, who have said that as it has been there for a while, and is on unadopted land, they bear no responsibility for removing it; it is the responsibility of…

Noisy water pipes
The stop male chicken for my home is conveniently behind the sofa in the lounge. The water pipe goes up the wall to the bathroom and boiler. Every time water is being used anywhere in the house, the noise is horrible. What can we do to silence or at least lessen the noise? My husband has spent some time Googling but not…

Extending an extension - feasible or not?
After deciding to move, finding a house and getting a buyer for our house, the seller we want to buy from has changed their mind! We've not found anything else suitable so are looking at other options. We have a single story extension and wondered how feasible it would be to add another floor to it. I believe the…

Water Fed Brooms?
Is it possible to buy one of those water fed Brooms to clean windows and gutters and connect to the tap. A window cleaner told me you have to connect it to a purified water tank or you will get streaky windows from using just tap water. Is this true, I just don't want to waste money.

LED lights and loft insulation
Hi, a quick question - do LED lights like these need anything (like a cover/cap) before loft insulation is put on top of them? They don't have any sticky-out bits on the back, they're basically just flat circles with some wires coming out. Don't know what brand/age they are. Thanks!

Is limited sub-floor ventilation a real risk for rot in 1930s semi with concrete rear extension?
Hi all, I'm currently in the process of buying a 1930s semi-detached house and had a Level 2 survey. One of the issues raised was potentially inadequate sub-floor ventilation, particularly at the rear. This is the information that I have got so far: * The original house has suspended timber floors (likely ventilated via 4…

How to remove limescale + soap scum buildup
I live in a hard water area and noticed recently a significant build up of hard yellow gunk under the plug hole in my kitchen sink. Quick google search told me it's a build up of limescale and soap scum. It's quite hard to get to as the drain hole covers most of it and can't be removed or taken out. I am not sure what to…

Fixing Gazebo to raised patio
I'd be grateful for advice on how to attach a gazebo to my patio. Patio is paved with 600x600x35mm sandstone pavers. Underneath these is 80-100mm compacted sand/gravel and under that is spoil, mostly bricks. What would be the best method of securing the gazebo? I'm also thinking of putting a roof on the gazebo which would…

Winters coming and need some new flooring
I’d really appreciate your thoughts and advice. I currently have no flooring in my house, just bare concrete, after having to rip up all the carpets due to the previous owner's cat having urinated throughout. I always assumed I’d get it sorted quickly, but life threw a few curveballs my way: I needed a new boiler just two…

Converting a garage into a bedroom..?
Hopefully a straight forward query and simple to answer  My son's house had a garage added as an extension over 20 years ago with building regs/permissions etc all done and signed off. If he want's to convert the garage into a bedroom (including changing the single skin walls into cavity, insulating the roof and…

Open plan conservatory
Hi all! I'm looking for some advice regarding the house my partner and I have bought. Unfortunately we weren't very 'savvy' during the buying process so please don't judge us! ☹️ We moved into this house in November, and our dining room is quite unusual. It's a normal room at one end, with a victorian-style conservatory…

No one wants to do my job!
Guttering replacement, replacing the tiles over the porch and a bay window and a new glass roof on the back porch. Local recommendations because I can’t get any personal ones but long established companies up-to-date with companies house and positive online reviews (for what that is worth) Some companies just won’t come…
