Energy department scam call

15th April. Unsolicited call (despite being registered with TPS). Wouldn't answer challenge as to why he called me. Went on and on, taking over me, about our fibreglass insulation being dangerous! Rubbish! Scam call indeed. I didn't wait to hear it all. Better things to do. Be warned. This is nothing to do with Government or any legitimate company/ orgnisation.

Maddening! We are registered with TPS too and there are still a lot of calls getting through.

Whenever I get a call from a number I don't recognise or is withheld, I say nothing. 9 times out of 10 they hang up within a few seconds. If they do start to speak I hang up as soon as they try any sales pitch.

Don't be polite, just hang up.

Many of these calls come from overseas, which isn't covered by the TPS, I believe (and are spoofed to look like UK numbers).

Both my wife and myself get at least a couple of scam calls every week. Maybe report on ofcom website in future. They are supposed to be doing something to help prevent scam callers with the providers. The more evidence they have of the issue, the better chance they have of doing anything about it.

Was this on a mobile or landline? If a mobile, hang up and block; if on a landline get a callblocker phone. Callers have to announce themselves which scammers don't like. Only once did one get through in the many years we had one. We bought one for my late Mum and she had 17 scam calls intercepted in one week!

At least fewer con artist actually knock on the door now. We had one claiming to be from a double glazing company who could give me a 'very good price'. He explained how our old windows could easily be removed as the glazing beads were external and could be removed in seconds. Only two problems with that (1) the windows had been in less than a year and still looked brand new (2) they all had internal glazing beads. He then tried to accuse me of wasting his time :-)

    I am the same.

Although I am not totally convinced that saying nothing makes them hang up, although I have heard this said a few times. I think the auto diallers they use ring more numbers than the call staff can deal with, so their system just cuts the call. Sometimes almost immediately after you pick the phone up.

I hang on until it cuts, or someone answers, just in case it is a real call. However as soon as they say they are calling from BT/Microsoft/Amazon/bank/police/HMRC etc, I just stop the call. I never engage with them.

When I had a landline, my TrueCall box stopped 99.99% of these calls in their tracks.

The TPS is utterly pointless. It only deters those who want to stick by the rules, not scammers.

If you have a mobile you could just ditch the landline. We reached a point last year where the only calls on our landline were from my elderly parents and scammers. We told the parents to call us on our mobiles and had the landline disconnected.

I appreciate that not everyone will want or be able to ditch it but it’s a good way to get rid of scam calls.
