How long?! - UPDATE post 21
I've had someone round to do an estimate for decorating a room. The room is 6 metres length by 2 metre wide. The bloke wouldn't give me an estimate there and then and said he'd need to work out the cost and get back to me. I asked if he can tell me how long it will take and he said about a week, maybe two. This is to…

Harveys sofa issue - any advice please?
Hi there, I placed an order for a sofa with Harveys. The sofa I ordered comes in a range of colours, including "classic white" and "star white". Basically classic white = cream, star white = white. I ordered star white. Sofa arrived and was a creamy colour, I mentioned to driver in passing and went to check invoice. There…

New boiler needed- what do I do?
Hi All, I have boiler and central heating cover with Shield and I had my yearly maintenance check on the boiler last week. At the time the Shield plumber said it needed a new seal and he'd put silicion gel around as a temporary fix. So he was going to get his parts dept to see if they could get it . They have since rung…

Garden Tap: Should I sleeve the copper pipe through the wall?
Our house was built in 2004 with a garden tap fed by an apparently unsleeved copper pipe through the brick wall. I am fitting a new garden tap in a different place. It is a purpose designed tap with an attached 300mm length of 15mm copper pipe. Should I just drill a 16mm hole and fit the pipe through the hole or should I…

Staircase
Having major renovations at the moment. Would soon be in a position to order a staircase. Who/where would be the best place to start. Is it something a carpenter can do or are there people who specialise in staircases. I would really appreciate it if others can share their experiences. I live in the Kent area.

New Kitchen - Wickes vs others + prices
We are finalising some designs for refitting our kitchen... People's experience, advice and input re. Wickes and others would be great. Last year we had quotes from Magnet, which we managed to hammer down in price, but didn't feel it was quite right for us, didn't include fitting and our builder (good but expensive) wanted…

Reinforced lawn area for parking
We have a small gravelled area in front of our house which visitors to us occasionally use for parking, maybe once a week. I’d like to have some grass out front but still be able to park on it if need be. I’ve seen reinforcing mesh that allows the grass to grow through, has anybody used this & can recommend a particular…

re-stating, renovating Minton Tile floor outside
Dear forum, I wonder if anyone can help. We have an Edwardian house in North West London with internal and external minton tiling. At the back of our house is an area of tiles quite badly damaged that has been halved in size by a previous owner and concrete paving put down. I would like to reinstate this floor up to its…

Help with Ikea frame hanging
I may be being dumb here as picture hanging isn't a gift that I have been blessed with! But I cannot figure out how to hang these frames I have bought. They are chunky so the board with the hook is quite deep. I thought about using long screws in the wall, but they are too fat to fit on the hook also. Any ideas??

Need to put ceramic tiles on all four walls
Has anybody managed to get a straight, level line around a room without buying/hiring a rotating laser level? My bathroom is 3m x 3m and will have ceramic tiles all around. I used a 'hang it off a nail' laser level, marked both extremes, matched the mark, rehung and marked on the next wall, and again, and again. To go all…

Outdoor Pizza Oven!
Here's one for you Anyone ever built or even seen a domestic outdoor pizza oven? I saw one on a Jamie Oliver show a while back and has been working in my head for a bit, have found a few "how to" videos online and a couple of websites devoted to them (just to prove there is a site for EVERYTHING!) but haven't quite made my…

Any advice would be welcome. Many thanks.

Boiler repairmen messing me around
Hi, hope this is the right place for this. In a nutshell, our boiler broke. We have insurance, so we invoked it and arranged for the thrid party engineer to come fix it. He declared it in good health, 30 mins after he went it went again. Same happened the next half dozen visits, they come and reset the boiler and it works…

Disconnecting gas cooker
Am I legally allowed to disconnect a gas cooker (bayonet fitting) or do I have to call out a Corgi engineer to do it? One will be re-connecting the new cooker in a few days time but I'd rather not pay two lots of callout fees if I can help it.
