Can we use our 'no claims' on a new second car?

Is it just me, or does anyone else find that really stupid?
Isn't no claims bonus supposed to show your 'safety' record as such, and give you a discount for being a 'good' driver?
So why not use them on a 2nd car? You can only drive one at a time? Unless I've missed something obvious..
 No.
NCB shows you have bought policies and not claimed on them, as opposed to not buying them, but having a good driving history! They give you a discount in return for you not making a claim - nothing to do with how good a driver you are (eg you can pay for your own damage to retain your NCD - so NCD doesn't prove you have a "good safety record")
You are right to say "you" can only drive one car at a time, but if you have 2 cars with named drivers, then both cars can be on the road simultaneously!0

use the comparison sites with 7 years ncb to give you a target and then hit the phones to the cheapest ones and see if you can swing an introductory discount/mirror ncb based on your claim free record as a named driver.

Work your way down the list until you find someone that will play ball although I’d have though your existing insurer would be the best bet.0

It isn't as straightforward as this when dealing with brokers.
Although they do get commission from the insurers, they can still pass on other fees on top of the premium to customers.
And many have small print in their agreement to enable them to get back from the customer any commission they lose by way of clawback from the insurer should the customer get any premium refund should the policy be cancelled/changed etc.
 Cheers.
I agree it pays to be aware of the fees and charges and the circumstances in which they occur.
Just in some cases I wonder why someone struggles with it when a professional could do the legwork and make sure it is correct.
As we know (those of us that spend time here), the consequences of getting it wrong can be very bad.
I'm not trying to scaremonger but there was someone on here the other day being pursued for £43K because they thought they were insured and it turns out they weren't.
I tend to do my insurance DIY but when I get into areas of finance that I don't understand too well then I call in a professional.0

Direct Line offer a 2nd car discount providing that the policy will be in females name and female will be the main user, and subject to claims & convictions critera for all drivers. You must mention you have no NCD but have been a named driver for X years on your partners policy
Same as Coop & Admiral, but doesn't help as it would require you to have accrued a no claims bonus as a named driver with them as your cirrent insurer
"If you have named drivers on your Direct Line car insurance policy, you (and they) will be pleased to know that we have become the first major insurance company in the UK to offer Named Driver No Claims Discounts.
This means that when we provide your named drivers with a quote for Direct Line car insurance, we’ll recognise every year they haven’t made a claim on your policy.
The no claims discount earned by named drivers can be used against a Direct Line policy of their own in the future. However, it may not be recognised by other insurers."0

I don't really want to go through a broker as I need to get this done today so OH can drive it home tonight!!
It is always worthwhile enquiring to see if a local broker (not swinton) can get you an introductory discount (you wouldn't have to take it up, but it would give you an idea of any savings you could make against buying direct with no ncd).
A broker could set the policy up immediately so you could drive the car today.0

Well they are professionals and they have email, faxes, phones and computers.
No reason why they can't do it quickly.0

yes they offer Named driver discount, good if youve got you kids named etc, but this is 2nd car discount where the policyholder & main driver must be female. And as long as they have been a named driver on their partners policy, they will mirror the ncd (it doesnt even have to be the same insurer either:)0

The 2nd policy I am looking for my OH will be the policy holder as well and I will be the named driver on both cars so I am not really looking at getting a policy in my name- I looked just out of interest and it was silly money! I have been driving for nearly six yrs but only as a named driver where as OH has been driving for 10 yrs always on his own policy. I'm just trawling the comparison sites at the mo to see how low I can get it.0

might as well get the second car in your name with OH as named driver, that way you build some NCB yourself0
