Can we use our 'no claims' on a new second car?

Hi,

My partner has 7 yrs no claims protected on our family car and I am a named driver on this policy.

Due to his work changing we have bought a new car but I am a bit confused about whether to put the 7 yrs no claims in the comparison sites or not. We are with churchill and when he rang them up last night they would not put the 2nd car on our policy and they then went on to quote us £960 fo a new policy- it is a Rover 25 1.1!!!!! We pay about £300 for our Kia Rio with them. Unfortunately we have only just renewed with them last month, so no swapping both over.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You can only use your NCD on one car.

Some insurers will give you a "mirrored" discount if you add a second car to the policy (eg morethan).

If the new car is more expensive to insure than the current one, you could change over the car on the current policy to the new one and get a new policy for your old car. In that way you would get the best value out of your existing NCD.

To answer your question, you need to put nil NCD in the comparison sites when searching for a new policy for the second car.

You can only use the no claims on one policy / vehicle, so your second vehicle will have zero no claims. There are 'multi-car' policies around, but that is basically just a volume discount each vehicle still accrues NCB separately.
  • thanks for your quick replies. I will see what difference it makes by swapping them over. Its just so complicated I don't want to put any info in wrong!

Thanks again for your help. :-)

If you are worried about getting it wrong and doing it the best possible way then why don't you get a professional broker to sort it out for you?

They carry liabiilty insurance, so if they made a mistake you'd be able to get recompense.
If you do it wrong then there could be bad consequences.

They don't charge you directly (they get commission from insurers) so why aren't you doing that?

Direct Line offer a 2nd car discount providing that the policy will be in females name and female will be the main user, and subject to claims & convictions critera for all drivers. You must mention you have no NCD but have been a named driver for X years on your partners policy

It isn't as straightforward as this when dealing with brokers.

Although they do get commission from the insurers, they can still charge other fees on top of the premium to customers.

And many have small print in their agreement to enable them to get back from the customer any commission they lose by way of clawback from the insurer should the customer get any premium refund should the policy be cancelled/changed etc.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find that really stupid?

Isn't no claims bonus supposed to show your 'safety' record as such, and give you a discount for being a 'good' driver?

So why not use them on a 2nd car? You can only drive one at a time? Unless I've missed something obvious..

an article in autoexpress said that insurers were so desparate to get new business they will match exisiting no claim bonus if you have been a named driver, they even had quotes from Admiral big boss.

    I've missed something obvious..

You missed the fact that insurance companies are doing business and they will try every way to extract more premium from poor driver :)
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.
  • I know its really annoying, we've always paid for protected no claims but this mean nothing obviously when it comes to a 2nd car!! oh well, not much I can do about it.

I don't really want to go through a broker as I need to get this done today so OH can drive it home tonight!!

thanks again fr the guidance. :)
