Car Insurance - second car

I passed my driving test about 20 years ago. As my husband had a company car, we insured our family car under his name, with me as the named driver. I have never taken out my own policy. Well, my husband has just been made redundant and lost his company car. We are now in the position of having to buy a second car for him to drive.
My question is - will he be able to insure a second car with himself as main driver, or will I now have to take out a policy in my own name?

Who was/is the main driver of this car?
Who was down on the insurance as the main driver?will he be able to insure a second car with himself as main driver
Whois the main driver of each car?0 -
Our existing policy is in my husband's name, with me as the Named Driver. He will be the Main Driver of the second car. Hope this clarifies things!0

Yes but who actually IS the main driver?
i.e. who drives it the most.0 -
Sorry - I am the main driver of the first car; I drive it the most. My husband will drive the second car the most.0

But if you are the main driver of the "family car" then you should be shown as the main driver on that policy.0

Hmm, sounds like we'll need to speak to the insurance company!0

The other thing to look out for is that if your husband is the policyholder (the policy is in his name) it is likely that the personal business use will be for him, so there is a risk that if you are using the car to get to work and back, you may not be covered.
Have a look at what the certificate says.
You might be better putting one policy in each name. Personally I would approach the existing insurer and in the event that your husband has been claim free on his company car policy (and can get a letter to that effect from the insurers) they may allow a decent starter bonus.
If there are two vehicles IMO it is best to have one policy in each name so that you each get personal business use. Alternatively if both policies are in one person's name, you should declare the main user on each policy and ask the insurer to give the personal business use to the main user. That way if there is an accident whilst driving to work there is no danger of the claim not being covered. If each of you use both vehicles equally and might drive either to work, explain the position to insurers and they may allow both of you to have personal business use on both cars.0 -
Some of the stuff on here makes me cringe.
Another classic thread leaving the OP about fifty times more confused than when they started.
Well played everyone.

!!!!!!? The OP never mentioned business use! And !!!!!! is "personal business use"? Do you mean commuting? The OP's husband has been made redundant, so i can't' imagine he's that bothered about being able to commute.I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair0
