Second Car Insurance

Why has an insurance company told me that I have to go back to 0 no claims discount when I have bought a second vehicle. I have 7 years no claims on my first car, which I need for work, but needed a car with more seats for the weekend to ferry the children around. Surely it is me who has the no claims and not the car so why can't I use the no claims on both policies? I can only also drive one vehicle at a time so why should it matter?

This is the same with almost all insurance policies in my experience.
You earn the no claims on a policy, which you then transfer when you move insurer. It is the policy that has no claims, not you.
If you start again with a second policy you need to build that up from scratch again.
Some companies, i believe direct line is one offer multiple car policies where you have the same NCB.0 -

We had this when we became a 2 car household but we fully expected it. Hubby has got full NCB and chose to use it on the newer car. ASDA matched the full NCB on our second car for the first year only, its just renewed and we now have 1 yrs NCB on the second car.
tom is correct that you don't earn NCB your policies do. You just have to choose which policy moves to any future vehicles you may get.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -

I took out a 2nd car policy with Direct Line last year and had to start my NCD fresh on the 2nd car
I initially thought I had full NCD but recieved a phone call saying that the NCD was currently applied to my other car. I was given the choice to switch where the NCD was applied, but I would have to build up a new NCD on the 2nd policy.
I've just renewed today, only my quote via Post from Direct Line for my 2nd car was £257 - I normaly take out new policies each year, but was surprised that a new online quote came to £284  Although there is the £75 quidco cashback to take into account.
I ended up checking on confused.com and found that I could insure my 2nd car for £207 with RAC and even get £50 quidco :j (I did contact Direct Line to see if they could match it, but was told they aren't allowed).0 -
Thats right if you get a 2nd car you need to start from zero NCD on it. Now there are a few companies that will do deals for you. Ie match your ncd for 12mths. Give you the discount of 3yrs and so on.
Here are a few options -
If your married - Insure the second car in the Mrs name and contact the likes of AA and Kwikfit Insurance. I know for fact that they will match the discount on the 2nd car that you have on the 1st car. They will only do this if the 1st car is in the Mr name and second is in the Mrs name.
If your insuring both cars then call NU and use the lieks of confused.com to obtain quotes. When using confused.com take note of the top rates and then call them direct and mention that you have another car with xxx am ount of ncd on it.
Obviously contact your current insurer to obtain there best price. If I have been helpful - Hit the Thanks button0 -

But note that they will adjust it according to driving history. If you have 5 years NCB and Mrs name had an accident within 3 years, they'll only match 3 years of the NCB. Hope this makes sense.:A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:AThinks Naughty Things Too Much Clique Member No 3, 4 & 5
