Second car insurance

Options
What's the best (i.e. most cost effective) way of insuring a second car?

Our existing family car is insured in my name with wife as named driver and with full no claims etc. on a policy with Direct Line.

A second car is about to be acquired for me to use - primarily through the winter months instead of using my motorbike - but wonder how to go about insuring it for as little outlay as possible. (Existing insurance runs from June to June so don't really want to cancel this and start again elsewhere - unless it will save me money!)

The second car is a 10 yr old Volvo estate which should have plenty of life left in it but is probably barely worth more than a few hunderd quid these days so Third Party insurance will do (although for some reason a Fully Comp policy come up cheaper on DL web site).

Intend to contact DL for their take on it but would appreciate any feedback on other options before I make my decision.

As I see it at this stage I have two options:

1. Taking out a completely separate (possibly short term to get me through the winter?) policy with me as the only driver and presumably with zero no claims.

2. Starting a new policy with the wife as the main driver and me as a named driver.

Anyone know any better ways of insuring a second car

Have you been claim free with Direct Line long enough for your wife to have built up NCD as a named driver? If you have it might be worth puting the policy for the new car in her name (but still telling the truth about you being the main driver - probably have to phone to do that?)

Changed to DL only this year so would doubt it.

We are both claim free for over 5 years (with her as a named driver on all of my previous policies) although I'm not sure whether this counts for anything now we've changed insurers?

I'll contact DL to check this out.
