Car insurance info re second car

Options
Hello,
My husband has 7 years no claims and is currently insured fully comp with Kwik fit. We have just bought a second car, and as we can't add another car to the kwik fit policy, we have gone with the cheapest other provider for a new policy for the second car. We have just been told that his 7 years no claims won't apply as they are already being 'used' by Kwik fit for the policy on the first car. So basically we have to start a second policy with 0 no claims, which sounds stupid as my husband has been driving for nearly 8 years with no claims in the whole time.
Does anyone know anything about this, and if it is correct?
Thanks for your help

    It is correct.

Shop around as some insurers will give some sort of introductory discount off the premium, but the NCB can only be used on one car.

Yes it's correct - if you take out seperate policies you can only use the NCB once.

Another possibility is to take out a policy like admiral multicar.
This would mean cancelling with Kwik-Fit, so you should be aware that there will be cancellation fees.

My advice would be to look at people like Admiral and Direct Line who offer policies for your situation and ask what it will cost if you cancel with Kwik Fit.
Make sure they know you are only asking the cost and you don't actually want to cancel.

Once you know the costs then you can make a decision.
Your husband will get no NCB for part of a year.

Totally correct. NCB can only be used on one policy at a time but you can have more than 1 set of NCB.
We had the same thing happen when got our second car for the first time and the co we were with at the time insured our second car on a new policy but because they knew hubby had full NCB they (as a goodwill gesture) matched his full NCB on the second car *for the first year only* at renewal the second car then went down to 1 yr NCB.

So next year your husband will have 2 lots of NCB. One of 5 yrs+ and one of 1 year. (Assuming there's no claims between now and then)

I must type quicker, there were no other replies when I started typing :D

Thanks for your replies, we will look into the options to see which is the best for us. It still seems unfair though, just another way of them making money out of us I guess.

Why is it unfair it is the car that is insured not your husband, the no claims is built up for the car on that policy and if you change car they will let you transfer it to the new car, if you buy a second car you take out another policy and start to build up your no claims on that vehicle.

presumably the 2nd car is not for him to drive unless he can drive two at a time !i would shop around as our 2nd car policy was cheaper with me having 0 ncb on a 1st policy than any of the so called "multi car" policies

cajef- I see your point but I although it is the car that is insured, surely it's the driver's ncb - and the fact it can be transferred sort of backs that up. All I was saying is that it seems harsh that a competent driver who has driven for 8 years with no accidents and who is very careful has to start from 0 ncb on our second car. I just wasn't expecting that to be the case. Obviously, now I know.
ChrissyG - the car will be mine when I pass my test so my husband has insured it in his name with me as a named driver. It has still turned out cheaper to have 2 seperate policies than cancel insurance on car 1 and take out a completely new policy covering both cars.

See your point, but there should be some allowance as it is the driver upon which the primary risk is assessed.

If the car is yours and if you will be the main driver you will need to take out insurance in your own name after you past your test, it is illegal to insure a car as a named driver if you are the main driver, it is known as 'fronting', insurance companies are tightening up on this and in the case of an accident you may well find they will not pay out and you could be liable.

We have clearly stated that I will be the main driver when applying for the insurance.
