Second Car Insurance, help please.

My husband and I are looking to buy a second car.
My question is about arranging insurance for the new car.
We will probably be buying privately, and if we view a car we like, is there anyway we could arrange insurance so we can take the car there and then, without having to come home, arrange the insurance over the net, then go back and pick the car up again?
Our current car insurance only insures us for the car we have at the moment, not any other cars.
Is there such a thing as a cover note we could arrange just for that day, then on getting home, arrange full insurance for the new car?
Also just reading through all the threads in here, I read about NCD only being used for one car.
As the car we have at the moment is in my name with 6 years NCD and hubby as a named driver, would I not be able to use this for the new car?
Would it be better to put the new car in my husband name with me as a named driver and start over with the NCD?
Help please, don't know what to do for the best.

Not sure about the cover note but regarding no claims discount many insurance companies will allow some ncd if a driver has been driving another car for some years with no claims being made. The only problem we found is that the insurance company applied a good discount the first year but come the second year when my husband had one years ncb from his first year insuring his own car they only took this into consideration!0

You won't be able to get one-day cover of the type you describe very easily at all. Most insurance contracts are an annual deal.
You could arrange insurance there and then over the phone, though, quite easily - why not get a quote for the car in advance, online, and then phone up to complete the deal with the relevant insurer if you decide to go ahead? Would only take 15 minutes once you'd definitely agreed to have the car.0 -
Hi, haven't read all the threads, but I got an offer from More Than today which will match my no claims discount (which is 65%) for my 'partner' on their car insurance. We bought a car two years ago insured it in my wife's name and named one of our daughters as a named driver who subsequently crashed it, so my wife will only have one years NCD on the next renewal which is next April. More Than will keep the offer open and give me a £15 discount if she takes out a policy. We will see what the premiums are but seems a good deal to me. Oh, and it is guaranteed for life.0

Thanks for all the advice.
The above is actually what I did.
Got some quotes on the internet and then called them to make sure we could get insurance on the day.
Went to look at the car, liked what we saw, rang the insurance company and hey presto, 10 minutes later I was insured.
As for the NCD, we actually transferred my NCD from the old car onto the new one. At a price, but in the long run it worked out cheaper than having no NCD on our new car.
That way my husband can start getting his NCD up on the old car.0
