Declaring interest to HMRC
I’m a 45% tax payer and the HMRC quiz tells me I do not need to fill in a self assessment tax return. However, I think I’ve read somewhere that I need to tell HMRC if I’m getting interest from savings, as the bank will only deduct 20% when really should be 45%. But I don’t do the self assessment, can HMRC work this out for…

2024 - 2025 Tax Not Calculated
I logged into my HMRC account today and it says it can take up to October to calculate. Is that right? I'm not self employed and have an employer however I started earning interest from savings in 2024 so I'm wondering if that's the reason it's not yet available, or is this normal? I'm wanting to prevent being taxed extra…

Investing money in Trust
My father passed away last August and left his house in Trust to myself and my brother, but has given his partner the benefit of Life Tenancy. She wishes to sell the house and buy somewhere else (which she has the right to do) and any residual money from the sale has to go into Trust for myself and my brother but has to…

Bare Trust - Multiple beneficiaries?
Hi, I'm investigating the process of setting up a bare trust. The intent is to put assets in trust on behalf of two minors (the beneficiaries). What's not clear from my internet research is whether it is better (or indeed even possible) to create a single bare trust with both minors named as beneficiaries, or whether a…

Savings account to send a fixed monthly value to a current account
A family members has asked my help in setting up some kind of account that will drip feed them a small amount of money each month (to top up their salary) without them having the ability to access the capital (to avoid temptation / aid financial prudence). They would be happy to give me the lump sum, but not sure that is…

Direct Payment Schemes for Inheritance Tax (IHT423) - Stocks and Shares
As HMRC have recently (late 2024) changed the rules to enable stocks and shares to be sold before probate is granted so that Inheritance Tax can be paid from the deceased's assets, under their "Direct Payment Schemes for Inheritance Tax (IHT423)", I've been trying to find any provider that has opted into this. I'm…

General Discussion and Whimsical Banter
It was only a matter of time. Personally I've never minded the off-topic comments in the main threads to discuss top easy access and regular savings accounts, but I can see it's becoming a greater problem given that there just isn't a whole lot going on in the top end of the savings accounts market right now and possibly…

moving shares
I'm a complete novice with shares, so apologies in advance! I have a few Lloyds Bank shares (from the Margaret Thatcher era) that I want to sell, to simplify things for those dealing with my affairs when I die. They are held by Equiniti Shareview, and I can see them in an online account. They are the only shares held…

Paying tax on interest
I am employed and self employed. As I understand it , you need to declare what interests you have earned on savings in your self employment tax return and then pay the tax due. But also if you are employed it will come out of your pay as HMRC will change your tax code accordingly to collect it in the next financial year…

Global tracker or diversify?
If global trackers hold approx 60-70% US stocks, in proportion to global market weighting, some commentators have concerns that this means being over exposed to US and the days of US exceptional out performance may be coming to an end. Some therefore advocate reducing holdings in pure global trackers and allocating more to…
