Compiling a family tree
I have been on genes reunited and have managed to make a start on my family tree. If I want to look into census records or contact anyone, I need to pay a subscription. As I am a bit tight (yes, just a bit!!!!) I don't want to pay if I can get around it. Is there anyone out there that knows of a free way to do it?

medical checks/screening for men?
Are there any? As a 61-year-old woman, I have regular smear tests and mammograms. I have also had a bowel cancer test which was sent through the post. I was wondering if there was anything similar for men? My husband is 62 and physically fit, and has also had the postal bowel cancer test, but there does not appear to be…

Equity Release - what happens next
My father took out an equity release on their house a few years ago. Not great but he got a good income from it for 20 odd years. He just passed away leaving my mother in the house. We're planning what to do next which may involve her leaving the house. My first questions: What if she moves into a care home and the house…

Valuing shares and/or unit trusts
I would like to know if there is a standard method of valuation of these investments following the settling of an Estate. The pared down facts are these: * Relly died and left unit trusts in Hargreaves Lansdowne. * We already had an account with that company so, in correspondence with the executor, agreed to having our…

State pension changes?
Has anyone gained the faintest glimmer from today's chitter chatter what the plan is for changes to the SRP? Will it mean that those already retired and not eligible for PC, but who may be on less than the basic of £97 pw will be second class citizens compared to those who will retire on the new flat rate of £140/155/a bit…

Dear MSE colleagues, I wondered if any of you had paid for a private medical, maybe including a CT scan or similar?. Despite assurances that all appeared well, I still…

Lasting Power of Attorney for Care Home resident
My husband is in a care home and has, among other things, dementia. I need a Lasting Power of Attorney in order to arrange his matters, and pretty quickly. I do have a power of attorney, but not an official one: it's in German for a start (hubby is German) but certified by a British notary. Hubby would sign anything I tell…
