Bathroom basin tap pipe question
I am looking to replace a late 1970s sink and its original taps. Clearly, the pipes are as old as the sink! I will likely need to cut them to fit flexi pipes on these. Can anyone tell me what the piece circled is called? I presume it is threaded and will unscrew?

Seized secondary hot water return pump
The pump on my secondary hot water return (picture attached) appears to have seized (it had not been used for a very long time as the attached timer had broken and I have only just replaced that). I am tempted to try to fix it myself but I am not entirely sure of all the steps. There are isolators on either side of the…

Tree roots impacting the neighbours
Hi MSE folks. We have a number of large cypress trees down the boundary line of our garden with the neighbours. The roots have started to cause damage to the neighbours' garden, patio and wall of their house. It's been building up over a couple of years and I have organised for the trees and roots to be removed at our…

Back boilers
Does anybody know about back boilers. The type behind a gas fire. Mother in law has such a system and needs rads bleeding. How does the system refill? She doesn’t have any gravity fed system. Hot water cylinder present. Is there likely to be a valve to refill the system behind the gas fire as I can’t see one anywhere else?

Why would someone extend a fireplace forwards?
I've just looked at a 1930s house with an open fireplace in the living room. Someone has extended the fireplace forwards into the room with bricks and put a big chunky mantel on top of it, nearly a foot wide. This makes the room seem a lot smaller (not huge to start with) and I can't think why someone would do this unless…

New UPVC windows & doors are draughty
We had new french doors and two windows fitted a few weeks ago. There is a draught and the room is very cold as a result. We’ve had the window company back to several times to check for any gaps and add extra sealant, also the manufacturer has checked the windows. Where do we stand if the windows continue to be draughty…

Rejoining hue cable?
Hey guys, After less than a day outside, my new hue outdoor light strip was bitten through by a fox! Turns our these strips have 6 cables in them, as pictured. As this was fairly expensive I'd like to salvage it if possible! Now clearly joining each cable to it's corresponding colour isn't too tricky - fiddly as it's…

Neighbour being awkward over new fence
My house was built in the 60's, when me and my girlfriend moved in 3 years ago there was no gate going down the side of the house from the driveway into the garden, so as soon as we moved in I had a gate installed to make the garden more secure. The fence that also ran down the side of the house between me and my neighbour…

Loft height dilemma
Hi all, Hoping for some guidance and advice please. We had an architect size up our loft space in a mid terrace property so that we have an idea of what’s possible. Unfortunately, there was very little space in the loft. If we wanted to have a bedroom and separate shower room up there, the ceiling would need to be lowered…

Hi Can anyone help me please. I want to refresh my bathroom fittings but cannot remove the old (please see images) There are no screws visible so was thinking they would just be concealed fixings with a standard pull up system if you know what I mean. Anyway they don’t want to come off even though they definitely slide…

Stuck in RIBA Stage 4 - move on or keep refining?
We’re stuck at RIBA Stage 4, with each iteration taking a month. We review documents, give feedback, but only about 10% is implemented—the rest stays the same. This has been going on for four months. How important is it to get everything right at this stage? Should we just move on and start talking to builders?
