How to relieve pressure in towel rail loop

I have a couple of towel rails which are on their own towel rail loop in my (oil-fired) heating system.  The return valve on one of the towel rails has started to leak badly.  I have shut it off and part dismantled it to try to put some PTFE tape around the gland (done once already two years ago but has now failed) but that has not really solved the problem.  So I need to seal off the water to stop the leak until I can find a plumber.  The circuit has two gate valves and I have shut off both.  It also has a bleed valve just before the return gate valve but when I open that nothing happens - so I must be doing something wrong.  I just don't know what it is!

  • Are you trying to bleed the towel rail loop down? If so, have you tried opening the bleed valve on the top of one of the towel rails as well.  If you’re not allowing any air into the top of the loop maybe the water is just holding in the pipes.

Good point; thanks will try that.  Have been diverted to finding a pinhole leak under floorboards that wife has just spotted!
