What do you think of this cellar?
Considering putting in an offer on a lovely Victorian semi, but it has this cellar. I don’t intend to make it habitable, but wondered what your views on the black/damp bit might be? It’s mainly round this chimney area and not in the rest of the space. Thanks for your insights 😊🙏

Remortgaging for new kitchen?
I’m looking at completely renovating my kitchen as it is currently falling apart. The only issue is I would know the best way to go about funding it. Would remortgaging be the best way to go? I am currently 2 and a half years into a 5 year fixed mortgage, the interest rate is 3.03%. I did the deal for this mortgage…

Neighbour not cooperating
Hi, a few months ago I noticed a few small dark stains on the party wall that look like damp stains, like shadows under the paint. They are not even visible unless you watch them from a certaiin position and in certain lighting conditions, but in that case they show clearly. The damp meter (I know, it's unreliable, but…

Beware of Currys. You can't change your mind once you open the box
As I have just discovered, if you buy a TV (or anything else, I believe) and you have opened the box Currys doesn't let you return it. You are stuck with it unless faulty. Next time I buy a TV I am going to go elsewhere... Argos lets you return stuff and so does Amazon. Not sure about other outlets, but I bet they do.…

Hose pipe - gravity question.
I have moved our hose pipe round the corner and lifted it for aesthetic and practical usage purposes. It is a newly installed tap. There is a small loss of pressure since the move. My thinking is that if I cut the pipe leading to the reel, the water would flow out of the tap, travel almost horizontally to the reel and the…

Porch paintwork replacement
My front porch has been neglected for a while (largely by the previous owners) and the layer of paint on the single skin brickwork wall is peeling away and needs to be reinstated. Talk to me as if I am ten years old. What do I need to do to firstly remove the existing paintwork on the wall and what paint product will be…

Fitting a bathroom using space from both rooms
am trying to fit an ensuite for Bedroom 1 utilising space from both rooms. I am trying to work out the best layout where it doesn't look like a box in the room and can integrate with the storage of both rooms to be as efficient as possible. Any ideas Thanks in advance.

Low level toilet cistern leak!
My low level toilet cistern leaked this morning. It looks like its just the siphon connecting to the pipe that leads to the pan. Looking at the gasket it looks like it is slightly depressed but not convinced that it failed, thinking that the screw has worked loose from repeated leaning on the cistern over years. My…

Toilet- water constantly flowing into toilet bowl
Hello Today, my upstairs toilet has started trickling water after it has been flushed. It’s trickling water at quite a fast rate. This has never happened before to either the upstairs or downstairs one. I THINK I have turned off the water valve for now - located under the sink basin there are two valves. The water has…

Replacing cables on up and over single Cardale Garage Door.
20 year old manual up
and over single Cardale garage door. I opened the door the
other day, heard an unusual noise and saw a cable fly out from one
side. I managed to manoeuvre the door closed again but it clearly
needs rapairing. I have phoned around
local companies for a price to repair the cable. One company quoted…

Nuki (or similar) unlocking for multi-point doors
We've booked a few airbnb properties over the last two years and some of these (all on the continent) had a clever locking system where a Nuki lock opening device sits on the key which in turn is in the cylinder (inside of course). The Nuki simply turns the key if you want to enter or leave and this can also be done…

Any up to date opinions on combined washer dryers? I now find myself without space for two machines so have to look into combining both as not enough room to stack.

Boundary wall
How do I go about finding out if this is a shared boundary wall or just mine or possibly there's? It's a strange wall as on the drive it starts on the drive and then runs behind into my garden then behind the fence.

Creating new doorway (internal - load bearing wall) and Buidling Control inspection
Hi, I am in process of creating new internal doorway (normal size for around 760mm door) in my house. Its under load bearing wall. I have submitted the building control application and paid the fees. They are still "validating" the application aparantly. The total cost of the job is £800 (quoted me from builder). It just…

Bench seating dining table size
Hi, Bit of a strange question. I'm building bench seating into an alcove, to look a little like the attached image, and I have an existing elm dining table I was thinking of upcycling. The table length is 150cm, and the alcove is 210cm wide. So centring the table between the benching in the alcove would leave me with 30cm…

Is this neccessary? (Roofing question)
Looking for some advice from someone with a little more knowledge than myself. We had a tile come loose with recent high winds and finally managed to get someone to come out and fix it today. Many roofers didn't respond/turned it down due to it only being a small job, so I couldn't choose a reputable roofer like I'd…

Annoying squeak - floorboard on radiator
Hi all, Living in a newish build townhouse I once had many of my floorboards screwed down as there were squeaks everywhere. Most of them were resolved. The bloke said Redrow only nailed the floorboards down so the nails come loose over time and squeak. However, there is one annoying squeak which he couldn't fix. It's from…
