Hi hope I'm in the right part of the forum please move if not.
I inherited a house from my nan and I'm going to be moving into it in a few weeks and I need to repaint all the rooms and don't have enough funds to get a decorator to do it I'll be getting help from my sister and a friend to help me paint the entire house however I don't have experience painting a house like this as in one room the ceiling is peeling and there's holes in some of the walls and a lot of peeling paint and it's poorly ventilated so theres been a mold issue for years and i am going to try and sort the ventilation out but don't have the funds just now so I was thinking of making sure my paint is ok to be cleaned with bleach when needed if it grows back before I sort the ventilation.

I've been told that crown trade extreme clean can be cleaned with bleach and is a good paint to use but I can't find the clean extreme in magnolia anywhere in 10L can only find the white and I did the paint calculator on Paint shed and it said for the entire house I'd need 7 10l tubs so it's going to be expensive and then I was told about Johnstone's trade coverplus so unsure which to go for.
I also need advice on what I do with the ceiling in the photo's I'll upload is this wallpaper do I just peel it all off? Do I just glue it back on?
And what is the best filler to use for the holes in the photos?
Also the main bedroom and near the front door has had a lot of paint peeling what do I to get the walls prep for painting?
Really appreciate any help or advice

They say with painting that the preparation is 90% of the job.
So you need to scrape off all loose paint or paper.
In most cases you will have to also scrape off/remove adjacent stuff that is not loose, otherwise there will be a very visible line when you paint over it. It depends on where it is/how obviously visible it will be. If there are places where only a small patch needs removing, you may get away with using a bit of polyfilla, and then sanding it right down with sandpaper so you can not see the join.
Then the walls look dirty, so they will need a wash with something like sugar soap solution.
Then when you do paint, it will all need two coats, or three if back to bare plaster.
So overall quite a big job !
Personally I do not think I would be going with specialist mould paint. If you are living there and the heating is on and the windows are open some of the time, the mould problem should recede.
You can maybe use 'Kitchen and bathroom paint in those rooms as it is easy to clean.1 -
I would be looking at reducing the damp problem at the same time as the redecorating - do you know what is causing/caused the damp? If you don't resolve it you'll need to be redecorating again in short order - repeatedly bleaching an area is not a solution.3

As Albemarle said, preparation is the key.
Peeling can be caused by a few things. Damp
is one, often condensation, but it could be that the paint wasn’t applied correctly in the first place (no mist coat for example). Make sure you do rectify any damp first if that’s the problem.
When you have the bulk of the peeled paint off then a coat of Peelstop should stop it peeling further. For filling and skimming over Toupret fillers are very good. They’re easy to use, sand down well and they don’t shrink or flash through the paint like some others do.
I’ve found Clean Extreme is good paint for bathrooms, etc. and it can be tinted if you buy it from a Crown Decorator Centre. Trade paints are usually higher opacity so you need to use less. The DIY shed versions are cheaper but you end up using more coats to get the same effect.3 -
If you have a Crown decorator centre near you, go and speak to them. Tell them what you are trying to achieve and they'll recommend the right paint for you. I've used clean extreme for years and it's very good paint. Don't be afraid to ask for a discount - they'll usually discount at least 20% - be nice with them and tell them you're on a budget and they'll help you out.
It's worth checking a website called thepaintshed for prices too as they are usually very competitive and delivery is free when you are buying quite a bit. You can call them and speak to them for good advice too.1 -
Thanks all , I've got a good idea now of what to do , the mold issue is due to poor ventilation and high moisture levels throughout the house @Emmia and I'm getting a dehumidifier to help until I sort the ventilation out as I'm allergic to mold so need it gone. I read you can get whole house dehumidifiers but not sure how they remove moisture from every room never had one before do you move it every few hours to each room or if it's in the hallway it can remove moisture for the whole house.
Anyway on the painting do I scrap off the peeling pain just in the area it peeling or do I just take it off the whole wall?
I'm going to do a mist coat once I've prepped the walls and the do two coats to start after the mist coat.

Also do I need specific paint for the wood doors or can I use the paint I'm putting on the walls?0
-
Use a different paint for the woodwork, although I've known people use emulsion on doors.0

I'd personally be looking at things like effective kitchen and bathroom fans with humidistats to reduce the humidity /moisture levels (circa £100 each - you're on a budget but these will make a big difference.HugoandHudsonsmum said:Thanks all , I've got a good idea now of what to do , the mold issue is due to poor ventilation and high moisture levels throughout the house @Emmia and I'm getting a dehumidifier to help until I sort the ventilation out as I'm allergic to mold so need it gone. Have you checked for things like blocked gutters etc.1 -

The issue is that if you just scrape of the peeling paint, when you paint the wall, you will be able to see the line at the boundary of the scraped section and the original paint. So it depends on its location ( is it in a prominent visible location, or not) and how good/perfect a job you want to do. At least you should sand down the edges of the original paint, and do a couple of extra coats over it and it will be less obvious.
You should use gloss, if you want a glossy finish, or satinwood for a less glossy finish. Do not use the emulsion paint you get for the walls. Also do I need specific paint for the wood doors or can I use the paint I'm putting on the walls?
The decision here is whether to use oil/solvent based or water based.
The former takes a lot longer to dry and smells more. It will fade quicker ( white goes yellow) but be more resistant to chipping.
If the doors have not been painted for many years they are probably the traditional oil based type and an oil based paint may go on better than a water based one, as there is some incompatibility between the two.

I could just get the fans for the worst affected rooms because not every room has mold issues badly. The kitchen and dinning room is the worst followed by the hallway so maybe I start by getting 3 and then when funds allow buy more.0
