High energy use smallholder
Hi all. I have a small holding in the mountains of Wales and a very old house (over 250 years) plus a ‘granny flat’. Our electric consumption is very high (last year around £3,500). Since Xmas we moved to a smart meter and so I can see that we are consuming approx 46kWh per day (and yes that’s for Jan-Mar so colder…

Pigeons nesting under my panels
I have a pair of pigeons nesting under my solar panels. Any recommendations on how to persuade them to "move on". They are particularly noisy cooing away and I an concerned that they may damage something. I am asking here as I am sure other people must have had this issue?

Battery
Hi all was after some advice I currently have a 3.6kwh south facing solar had since 2016 and now looking to add battery storage , my current inverter is a Growatt 4000, on average we seem to produce 3559.67kWh for the year (according to my fit payments bills). Our electric bill usage for the year is 2027kWh according to…

Complex forms!
Hi All, Please excuse me sounding like I'm completely clueless...I am! We moved into a new build with 15 solar panels installed about 5 years ago. Woohoo! Savings...even earnings...hmmm... It's just the paperwork. I KEEP going back to it, but it's sooooo complex. I have asked BG for some help...nope, not willing. I feel…

Aurora Inverter Decode
My solar panel system is controlled by an Aurora Power One inverter fitted approx 6 years ago. Can anyone help me decipher the various messages that flash up on the screen display. The serial no is of only passing interest, I am more interested in knowing how much power the unit is producing at any one time and whether I…

Batteries are they worth it...
Hi, I am trying to get quotes for solar panels. So far only one company has responded. They have quoted with a battery and one without. The system with the battery is roughly 10k and the one without is roughly 6k. Is the extra for a battery worth it? We spend a lot of time at home during the day at the moment due to…

Growatt or Solar edge
Hello, Just about to push the button on solar and my favorite quote so far I have a choice between 2 x 6.3kwh Growatt batteries or a 10Kwh Solaredge batteries(the new Energy bank one). My PV system needs optimisers due to multiple roofs and shading. The Solaredge battery is about £1k more expensive and less capacity 9.7kwh…

Mixergy hot water tank alternatives
Hi I believe that these cost about 2K or so however I'm not sure how long it'd take for this to pay off? Not sure if it's worth it as such atm. Are there alternatives? It's a heat pump not water tank essentially

Hybrid inverter or AC coupled on Solar/Home Battery system
Hey everybody I'm just about to get a solar array system and home battery system installed at my property. I've had lots of quotes but some have hybrid inverter (givenergy, growatt) and others have ac coupled inverters including Solaredge. I'm trying to decide if I should go AC coupled or hybrid for solar generation and…

I believe that we could fit 6 (3 feet by 4…

Sunak announces 0% VAT on energy-saving materials
Sunak announces 0% VAT on energy-saving materials Sunak says for the next five years, homeowners will pay 0% VAT on energy saving materials, such as solar panels or heat pumps. wonder if it extends to battery add-ons and when it will come into effect? I'm due to pay £900 VAT on a battery install on 12 april.

Second opinion on PV/Battery quote
Hi Having nearly been sold on a £12.2k 4kw system with a 4.8kw battery from Project Solar, this forum helped me to identify that I was being ripped off. Having now had what I would consider a really competitive quote compared to others could I ask if anyone has a second opinion or can critique in any way? We did get quotes…

Smile.Amazon.co.uk - Amazon's little known ethical initiative
Must concede that there are environmental concerns about purchasing from Amazon (vs. your local grocer or farm shop). However, should you find yourself without an alternative online destination, thought I'd share that replacing/bookmarking the URL with smile.amazon.co.uk allows for 0.5% of your purchases to be donated to a…

Solar PV inverter ratio - What happens when I add more AC capacity (DC/AC < 1)?
I am going through process of finilising my quote. Panels will be in two separate orientation 5x385W (1.9kW) facing South and 7x385W (2.7 kW) facing south east. We have decided to go with two separate strings therefore I need two inverters. I have been quoted for 2.2kW and 4kW to go with those panels. Company offering this…

Heat Pump < Gas Boiler in costs over lifetime

Submitting Feed in Tariff Readings
There's been a lot (a huge number) of posts about submitting your gas and electricity meter readings to ensure you're charged at the lower rate for all energy used up to today and aren't subject to estimated readings. I've not seen anything suggesting this for FIT readings. It's the opposite way round for us, it's worth…
