Are hear recovery systems worth it?

So I got the keys to my house on Monday. I noticed that the tiny bit of garage area (or what uses to be the garage), and a little bit of room in the attic, which had insulation in it, were incredibly warm.
Would it be possible to recover the heat from those locations and both vent it for... heat and also the reverse too? (ie: cooling), essentially having "free" heating / cooling?

Trouble is, your attic & former garage will tend to be hotter than the rest of the house in summer and cooler in winter. So you will have free heating when you want it cooler and free cooling when you want it warmer.
Now I have a loft (attic) and despite insulation it is warmer than the outside air in winter (but colder than the rest of the house). And I have an ASHP. I have thought that it would be good if I could pump the heat out of my loft and back into the house. But the loft is not well-ventilated, which is why it gets warmer than outside. So an ASHP in my loft would pump the heat out but then start making my loft colder than outside (like a giant fridge) so this idea would not work unless you could switch to outside air as the heat source at the point the loft gets to outside air temperature.Reed2 -
