Dead Apple Tree ?
I've got a very very old apple tree Lord Lambourne I think. In the six years I've known it, it's cropped reasonably well only a couple of times, but always blossoms and comes into full leaf. This year it blossomed, but what few leaves did appear eventually dropped off Some of the branch twigs are brittle (apple is like…

Newbie gardening question
I bought a 6 pack of geraniums from B&Q today and planted them out. Now I'm just wondering if I was meant to take them out of the "teabag" that each plant was grown in?! I've checked the picture instruction on the side, but I'm still not sure. If I was meant to take them out first, can I dig them up, remove the teabag then…

Looking for cheap potting on pots
Has anyone found any good value multipacks of the next size up from 11cm pots? I bought loads of 11cm ones from poundstretcher - they were £1 for 12. Flimsy but fine if you take care. I am looking to pot on some plants from that size to bigger and can't find any reasonably cheap pots and as I need loads I want to spend as…

Feel new expensive hobby coming on.....
We moved house in 2015 and are still stocking the large garden, which had been terribly neglected. Last weekend we erected a pergola. It looks pretty bare and I just suddenly thought I would like some rambling roses over it. We don't know much about roses so decided to go to David Austin Roses to get advice and buy one.…

Help with Weeds!
I had our garden areas landscaped last year, at a fairly decent expense. The local landscaper, someone highly regarded online and with all the right accreditations and work guarantees, promised me a low maintenance solution. Part of the landscaping is stone chippings running alongside the driveway. Within the last year…

Is it worth planting out my dwarf cherries?
I have two dwarf or patio cherry trees which have been in containers which are probably too small for about five years. They are supposed to bear fruit but have never looked like it. I could plant them directly into soil this year - does the forum think it's worth it? I'm happy if they decide to become full sized cherries…

Best Blackberry to Deter!
I noticed an intruder on CCTV trying to get over the wild looking blackberry bush in my nans garden, The thorny bush had cut them and i even found bits of clothing on the spikes. What is the most dangerous variety to act as a deterrent, i notice most stores are mostly selling thorn-less versions but that is no use to me.:A

Taking cuttings
Hi, I'm not a great gardener and have quite a bit of empty space in the rear garden for some shrubs. I fancy taking a few cuttings and then planting them out, I'm thinking snip 'em off, shave a bit of bark, dip in rooting powder and pot 'em up. I am hoping that if I spray the leaves they will survive until the roots grow.…

Neglected garden! Help!
Hi all, I’m a new home owner, my rear garden is a reasonable size but hasn’t had any work for a long time! There’s a gravel area at the bottom with a shed that’s seen better days. There’s old furniture down there as well from the previous owner, it can’t be rescued and has to be scrapped. I already rescued a dining table…

Planting seeds indoors
In an effort to be frugal, I am thinking that instead of buying flower plants for the garden this year, I shall buy seeds and start them off indoors. Am I too late for this now? I have read that they should be planted indoors for six weeks before planting outside. Also, my garden is very shady and small. As well as this, I…

Moving saplings
Hello MSE-ers, I'm new to this area of the board! More of an advice question than moneysaving - I live in a city centre terrace in Birmingham with a small yard/garden, and some saplings (pretty sure they're horse chestnuts) have started to grow in my garden, I can't keep them as they'll grow far too big for the area and…
