Screening ideas for ugly house wall?
Options
Good morning!
We're tackling the garden bit by bit and I need some help please.
Our kitchen window is driveway side and faces the neighbour's house, and their horrible yellow and tan (YELLOW AND TAN!!!) mismatched brick wall. There's a bed with hydrangeas there but it doesn't hide it well.
I'm looking for ideas for things that will grow tall but won't cling or affect their foundations (we're more considerate than they are!) that will make us happy when we see it all seasons. Something that's good for wildlife too? I had thought about a pyracanthus against the wall but I'm worried about it not growing tall enough and having too many spikes. It's out of everyone's way but pruning those doesn't sound fun!
Husband says no more laurel...
It's a shaded area. Something that will cover well would be good as it really is a hideous sight
I'm wondering about maybe Garrya but I'm not sure!
All suggestions welcomed!
Thank you!
Lucy

Possibly also a nice variegated ivy(don't like them myself) on a trellis, that would blot out the wall and provide some colour. Need pruning to ensure it didn't climb onto neighbours wall.0 -
Ooh thank you! I just had a Google and I'd never really seen other evergreen honeysuckle apart from armandii but there's some other lovely ones isn't there?
There is space for us to put a long container/raised bed stylie to grow some ivy too, thanks...I'm not fond of it because I've had to pick it off my old house and out of my hedge here but it is pretty if it's kept under control isnt it.
The previous owner planted ivy there directly against the wall but it grew so tall the neighbours got mice in their loft apparently, whoops!
I could probably leave the hydrangea there too if we did that. My husband doesn't like them but I don't mind them, they're the 1970s stylie blue and pink ones! Better than yellow and tan brick.
Thanks again!0 -
I've grown buddleia, eucalyptus and bamboo (fargesia type, less likely to spread.) In large pots they are easily managed and grow to a couple of feet above the fence giving us privacy for sitting out and not being overlooked from their landing window. They don't have to be too tall, it's about perspective. Ask someone to stand at the fence and raise their arms above their heads. That'll give you some idea how high your screen needs to be.
The buddleia isn't evergreen but can be moved around and gives us privacy in the summer when we need it. HTHThe beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.
