Out-of-date coconut oil
Hello all! I have @ 3/4 of a jar of organic virgin coconut oil that I bought a while back for a specific recipe. It then spent time languishing at the back of the cupboard. I "found" it again the other day languishing at the back of the cupboard with a best before date of 20/2/14. Oops!! Any ideas of what I can do with it?…

The secret to good soup
Sorry if this has been discussed before but I couldn't find anything. I am trying to find the secret to making a good tasty soup. I have attempted to make soup so many times over the years and it never turns out well. It is always very bland and nothing like the soup you get in cafes/restaurants. I have had some limited…

On Saturday, I am hosting a 'Last Night of the Proms' party for 10 persons. I have ordered Union Jack tableware, made some UJ bunting, set the dress code as 'patriotic' and will be preparing UJ themed song-sheets. What would you suggest for a menu? I would like to include something from England, Ireland, Scotland (maybe…

Breakfast and Lunches for Work
Hello All, Happy Sunday. I'm new here. Just wanted to say hello and post a thread about packing up food for work. I ALWAYS default to the easy option of a loaf of bread and it's never a good idea. So today I popped to the Cooperative and bought: + A bunch of 7 bananas for £1.29 + All Bran (Own brand) for £1.39 + 500g of…

Accidentally left some cooked half eaten salad meats and other stuff in fridge before going away for a month. Fridge smelt to high heavens on returning and two defrostings later plus washing the interior thoroughly twice and leaving dooe open for a while hasn't completely removed smell. It's as if the odour has permeated…

Freezing plums for chutney?
Hi all, Quick question... We have a lot of plums here we would like to turn into chutney but haven't really got the time to do it today. Can I freeze these then defrost and make chutney? If so, do I just stone them then bag them for the freezer? Thanks :)

Smelly washing machine.
Our washing machine is beginning to smell. I understand that it's due to mould infiltrating the drubber/plastic parts of the machine. We've changed the door seal but the smell seems to be lingering. Is there any way to get rid of the smell or is it a new machine? Thanks

Low salt diet the old style way
This week I found out that I now need to follow a low salt diet. I'm wondering if anyone can direct me to any websites which have low salt recipes, but where the ingredients won't cost a fortune. In future my chief driver for food purchase will be the low salt element, not low cost, but I want to keep food expenditure at a…

Vanish or generic oxy stuff?
We have a lot of white shirts in our household, 4 DD's college, PE and work uniforms. Some of them are looking a bit grubby, and even have perspiration/deodorant marks. I have used the generic oxy powder to soak and it does improve it but I haven't managed to get them back to like new. Is the branded Vanish a better buy?…

How to stop soda crystals going hard?
I've tried leaving them just in the plastic bag with a peg holding the bag closed; or nside the bag in a sealed plastic container; or tipped loose into a sealed plastic container, and the result is always the same - within a week all I have is a rock solid lump which is so hard I can't use. I've only used a couple of…

Jam disaster :(
I've just made some jam but when boiling to setting point it burnt on the bottom and now the jam tastes burnt :( Is there any way to salvage this? I think the first jar is edible but the rest not so much. Also how on earth do I clean the pan now - it's a preserving pan and I'm not supposed to scrub it! Thanks :)
