Varnish for Oak?
Evening All, I’ve recently done out the whole house in oak skirting and architrave. After reading lots of reviews i decided to go with Osmo Polyx oil and have done one coat on all of the upstairs. I’m not overly keen on the finish, it does look great and really brings the grain out in the wood but has darkened it quite a…

My dad was loyal…

What could be the issue? This morning I noticed in the kitchen (which is partly below the bathroom) that the the ceiling was wet. My partner had just finished showering so I thought it could be that. It somewhat dried during the day but now it is wet again with the water a yellow/brown color. Noticed outside that the waste…

Can I use treated sawn timber for pergola
I’m planning a small pergola in the garden and was looking at 4x4” wooden fence posts as the uprights and cross beams, treated sawn posts look good value for money but a rather crude finish. Could I use them and sand them for a better finish? And could they be painted black or grey with an exterior wood paint, or is it not…

Please Help, no Heating!
Hi all - I have a weird issue with my heating system (not combi boiler). When both the hot water and heating are on, the Heating works fine and radiators are all running. Bathroom power fault
Hi, Before calling out the 'lectrician I wanted to check for anything really obvious with our current issue. In our bathroom the extractor fan and 2 ceiling lights are not working: * All 3 have a separate pull cord switch but must be on the same supply. * They used to work independently of each other (ie the fan is not…

cost of a new boxed bay window to extend living room
Hi, Has anyone had any experience adding a new floor to ceiling boxed bay window with a pitched tiled roof to the front of their house to add more space to their living room? About the area of a 2 or 3 seater sofa. Any idea how much this would cost as an estimate? thanks, Paul

Wooden door thresholds
Anyone have them? Not really a fan of the metal ones if i can help it and i have solid oak skirtings throughout the house so thought it would tie in well. The ones i’ve seen that are carpet to carpet seem to be a T bar but with no grippers in unlike the metal ones. The carpet company who is fitting my carpet suggested if i…

Soaked chipboard and MDF - roof leak
Hi, New here. We are having a loft conversion done and company has failed time and again to waterproof the roof, so we are now experiencing the 4th rain leak in 5 weeks. As a result, one of the chipboard roof panels (where it leaked every single time) has been soaked through and through, and I am concerned about its…

Mini fridge motor sometimes makes TV power off and on!
I've got a mini fridge on the same floor as my TV, but on different sockets (not even the same pair) however, when the fridge motor turns itself off, the TV occasionally powers off and powers back on quickly. Can anyone tell me what might be up? Is it the fridge? The TV? There's about six devices on the same socket as the…

Best sealant for frame of a timber conservatory
Can anyone advise the best sealant to use for a timber-framed conservatory? I've tried silicone sealants sold by B&Q but they don't seem that great. The conservatory is being renovated and was originally built using sealant in various parts of the frame. Some of it needs to be replaced and I would like to find the best…

What to put on shed floor
Hi, I am looking to put something on our new shed floor. Main reason for putting something is to avoid any damage to wooden floor when moving things or if I drop something. Fireplace Options
We are going to have some fireplace companies come out to the house and talk us through options, but looking for some advice/options in advance (first time home buyers about to exchange for context!) Dishwasher or manual?
I have never been the tidiest of persons, a friend said a dishwasher helped her, helped a lot more than the son/daughter. :) Do you love your dishwasher, are they all the same, would a bog standard one suffice?
