Little help with paintbrushes

Sorry to ask this question but its something I would usually ask my dad but he died earlier this year.
I've got a set of Dulux Perfect Finish paintbrushes which I got for painting the walls with matt emulsion, (never used them instead used a paint pad) can I use them with gloss paint for the skirting?
My dad was loyal Harris fan, so had a natural bristle 2" when he used gloss paint but for the life of me I can't find it.
I remember him saying something about not using synthetic bristles with certain paints but can't remember which.
I just want to use the correct tool for the job?

Synthetic brushes much better with water based paints, if your using a solvent based gloss type paint real bristle (hair from a pig probably) is better. If its a new bristle brush brake it in first.
