Engineered wood, what type, where to buy?
There seems so much choice and so many 'discount warehouses' to buy the flooring from. Is it just down to price and preferred style? I mean standard planks, narrow planks, wide planks? Brushed and oiled, oiled, lacquered, brushed and lacquered... Are there some that are a 'smarter value choice'? Easier to look after, wear…

Tube / Snake / Sausage sandbags
We have a problem with our garage door since we bought the house. The drive slopes every so slightly towards the door, so in very heavy rain we get water ingress underneath the door. I've rectified this by installing a garage door rubber threshold, which has been terrific so far, but during abnormally heavy rain like the…

Cooker hood
Hi All, been living in our house now for 4 years and have noticed the cooker hood hasn't been drawing the steam etc from coozing very well resulting to sticky walls, and moisture. Any way the filter isn't very dirty as we changed it not long ago, so I went outside and pulled the front off the chimney outlet to find its…

Adding a socket
Hi, Ok so we have a large irregular shaped upstairs landing with only one double electric socket fitted. At the other end of the landing we have a console table and SWMBO would really like a small LED lamp on it, but there's no available socket. The upstairs stud walls are metal framed, so it would be relatively easy to…

Roof - mechanical fixings
Hello, We are in the process of getting our new roof done, but we have a question on mechanical fixing with mortar on ridge tiles. The mechanical fixings stick out at about 2 inches due to two of the foam washers being used on top of one another above the metal plank (difficult to explain without the use of pictures).!…

Party Wall Agreement needed?
I live in a semi-detached house, and a couple of years ago, my neighbour had a conservatory built on the back of his house. Part of the works, was to build a new wall between our 2 properties, along the boundary line. I agreed to the works at the time and even paid half towards the wall, as we thought we might also extend.…

Why is there a large wooden beam in a brick wall in my house?
So I have recently bought a mid-terraced house, built around 1910 I believe, with a single story rear extension. The extension has a pitched roof but a flat ceiling so there is a small loft space above it. I've been up there and noticed a large wooden beam embedded in one of the walls. below it there appears to be a thick…

Buildover Permission Time Limit?
It has been 2 full weeks since Severn Trent received my Buildover Application with DVD and Survey etc. I have been told it will take between 2-3 weeks for confirmation to come back but my neighbor had her permission in 7 days although this was back in 2014. Does anybody have experience of the time it takes to get an answer!

Bricking in Porch?
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=n148x1&s=9 I have an open porch as the picture. Can I just brick up the porch, in matching bricks of course, and fit a new front door to give me an enclosed porch or do I need to seek permission from some department of the council? This is in Scotland

Knocking through for open plan kitchen
I’ve just bought a house which has a living room and kitchen on the upper floor. Both are quite small and I’ve seen other similar houses that have knocked through to have an open plan kitchen/living room. I realise this is a bit of a “how long is a piece of string” question but does anyone have any idea of a rough price? I…

Ultra sensitive burglar alarm mat
The door to our back garden is in a utility room off the kitchen and is not visible from the kitchen. This was a problem when our last dog wanted let us know that he needed to go out to water the geranium. We solved it by putting an alarm mat by the door which he learned to stand on to alert us to his need. Our current dog…

Fixing sloping floor with cut insulation board
The concrete floor in my dining area slopes fairly significantly to one end, about a 120mm drop over maybe 3.5 meters. I was thinking that instead of pouring more concrete or self-levelling compound I could lay some rigid foam insulation board cut at an angle so the final surface is level, then install wooden flooring on…

Where is best place to buy a boiler on finance?
Hi guys, I am looking to buy a new boiler, but I can't afford to buy up front. I wanted to spread the cost over a longer period. The combi boilers I'm looking at are between £1500-2000+. Do you know where the best place would be to find out about finance on a new boiler, and what's the cheapest I could pay per month?
