Fireplace Options

We are going to have some fireplace companies come out to the house and talk us through options, but looking for some advice/options in advance (first time home buyers about to exchange for context!)

The property has an oil tank, so our fuel source is oil rather than gas. So I am trying to understand if this limits our options for fireplaces. We do NOT want the fireplaces that look fake/like photos - not sure what you would classify those as. But essentially we want real flame.

Is our only option for this a wood burning fire/stove?

Has anyone recently had one fitted and can give us any ballpark of costs for material and installation? We have no hearth either so will also need that fitted.

  • We are the same as you and have oil fired central heating. We opted for a multi fuel stove for our living room. The living room is an extension we had built so the chimney was built for the multi fuel stove. I'm sure there was a difference from a normal chimney, I think it had to be lined. Will ask hubby and let you know.
  • Do you want the fireplace for ornamental or heat purposes?
If it's mainly for decoration the cheapest option could be an electric fire that contains a LED flame effect bulb.
A fire such as one of the Focal Point range with just the LED on would run for 40 hours for one unit of electricity.

  • A bit of both - to look nice and to heat. But personally we think the LED flame effect ones look cheap and tacky.
  • Can't beat a real open fire and burning things! :)
