Do I need to pay tax on savings interest?
Following the recent sale of an inheritance property I have deposited around £70k in a high interest savings account, earning around 5%. My current income is my full state pension plus a small amount I take from my SIPP to take me up to the tax threshold of £12570. The remainder of the inheritance money (£200k) is now…

Trustnet Portfolio
Hi I find the Trustnet Portfolio a useful tool when it comes to tracking the performance of my s&s ISA and SIPP. My question is is it possible to add individual shares listed in the USA as a holding? I have played around with the add holding feature and searched online but cant seem to find it. For example if you held AAPL…

Assisting with tax through gov gateway
I have helped my elderly mother register an online tax account and she has requested me to be able to help her with her tax affairs via the online service. I have received an email from HMRC informing me of the request but when I log in to my own account I can’t find any messages or links to actually accept the request.…

Hi, My dad bought some shares in my name many decades ago. He originally had them as paper certificates, then a couple of different online portals, and now in Fidelity. He has passed them over to me to take control. I want to sell them and get the funds into my ISA (possibly re-buy the same shares again if i think they…

CGT Liability on Sale of French Property
My Parents owned a holiday cottage in France for 35-years which was sold last year when my mum died. There was no CGT due in France and in accordance with French inheritance law the proceeds of the sale were spilt 50:50 between my dad and mother’s estate. My mother estate was then split equally between my dad, me and my…

Onshore investment bonds - rationale...
I posted this on another thread earlier but as the title was just 'investments', I suspect it might get lost in the noise... I'm curious about onshore IBs attractiveness, even with reduced CGT thresholds. Given the 5% annual withdrawal limit to stay free of income tax - unless you're investing a large 6 figure sum (or…

Locked out of Chip app

NS&I Index Linked Savings Certificates - Renew or Possible Alternatives?
Have some NS&I Linked savings certificates coming up for renewal next month. I would have renewed but found out you now can't withdraw them until the fixed term ends. I might need to access that money before the new term would end, so this is a concern. Any suggestions what I could do with the money if I choose not to…

Customer Service for Banks (e.g. Cynergy)
I think need to look harder at customer service and ease of use before recommending a banking/saving provider. I recently set up an ISA with Cynergy, good rate but very poor service. * One two occasions firstly 40 minutes then 30 minutes for them to answer the phone. * Offshore staff struggled to understand me (Northerner)…

My mum lives at home with her partner and the house is…

Retirement income
Married man age 54 planning on retiring at 55. Disabled older wife on state pension only. Mortgage paid off. Is a retirement pot of £750,000 enough and the investment question is should I take out the 25% tax free lump sum and invest it somewhere. My pot is not doing too good at the moment.

lower risk funds - and/or stop loss?
Probably a dumb question - and I'm certainly a beginner where it comes to funds - but I'll be looking to add more cash to my ISA's... (or near cash equivalents) in the next month, and I'm wondering if there is an alternative to cash that would beat an "easy access ISA"? I've looked at Royal London Short Term Money Market Y…

Junior SIPP and carry forward rules
Himy 4 year old has a junior sipp (opened Nov 2020) and he regularly gets £100 deposited each month since 2020. I'd like to make a contribution of £3600 today, can he use the unused amount from the last 3 years as a 'carry forward' so that all his 2024 deposits get tax relief and the additional 25% from government? eg.2021…
