Victorian terrace minor damp
Hi, looking for some advice on how to handle a bit of damp in our victorian terrace. We noticed it after finally removing wallpaper to paint after 5 years. Its a bit cold and you can see some water marks upto 50cm up walls all round the house. Its not mouldy or anything hence I don't think its bad. We have wall vents and…

Semi-Detached Neighbour Extension?
My nan lives in a private house attached to council neighbours, My nan has received a letter from the Council informing her that the council neighbours have applied for permission to have a front extension coming out 2 metres to make the downstairs living room bigger and various alterations inside the house. The letter…

"thick" emulsion
Just took a wide light fitting down with a much narrower one going up. I've been left with marks and holes. I have filled and sanded but of corse this area now stands out a little as its a different texture to the rest of the ceiling. Is there a thicker covering emulsion out there I can use on the whole ceiling to give a…

Solar panels cleaning
I had a quote to clean my 8 solar panels for £100, so I am thinking about buying a 7m water fed brush, around £40 on ebay. Pigeons perch on my aerial, that is why they need cleaning, they haven't been cleaned for over 2 years, I should really pay someone to move the aerial.

Shower reversed inlets
My daughter has just had a new shower fitted. Involved some pipework and new tray, door and mixer. But somehow the inlets are reversed and the shower doesn't work properly. Plumber is coming to propose solutions and I am wondering what she should insist on. The ideal would I suppose be to remove the new shower tray to…

How to attach to shed roof?
I have seen a decorative item I would like to attach to my shed roof but don't know how to. I assume if I screwed it onto the roof, this would cause a leak, due to damaging the felt. I have attached a picture of a similar item.

Lock for hollow core door
Hey everyone, I'm trying to keep my children from going into my office and ransacking it for various things and then causing havock. I've tried putting things into zipped and clipped bags, then into cupboards with kettlebells in front - alas - they still get in and dig around! So, I need to lock it from the outside (and be…

cordless stick vacs vs uprights
Hello Are cordless vac worth it these days? They are OK in the beginning but as they age they lose their suction power, little seals here and there go, there are so cracks somewhere because it's been dropped etc. They are very expensive starting at £300 for recent models, not even the brand new models which are £500+ with…

Water Hammer dilemma - particularly regarding costs
Having read a few threads on this topic, I can see this is a common and frustrating issue. I am in a rental, the lady below me owns her flat. Almost every watery thing causes water hammer. Very bad from the shower in particular and I hear it from washing machine, but kitchen taps by washing machine also cause some noise.…

Larger Garage
We have a single garage - a concrete Comptons 21 feet by 7 feet approx. Would it be possible to extend it, width-wise to make it a double size retaining both side walls with a new double door – no idea what the roof would need (its an Apex) – it is fine, length-wise. We have the space and just need the concrete base…

Insect infestation
Ok, maybe infestation is a little strong but I've been encountering a lot of these small, beetle type insects in the house, mainly in the kitchen but also other rooms facing the back of the house where I've had windows open. Not sure what they are, probably around 2-3mm in length, nearest I could get off Google was a Hide…

Recommendations on Pressure reducing valve..
I have a habit of getting stuck with a decision when there are too many choices and I find myself stuck now, confused as to the best PRV to buy. I need to reduce my mains pressure from 7.4bar down to about 3. I need one that is 'drop tight' / controls static and dynamic flow I believe for the purpose I need it for (though…

Noisy Neighbours
Hello Everyone, I have lived in my own leasehold property since 1994 and I have never experienced so much noise until now and this is awful. In December 2025, the flat above mine was sold to someone. In March this year three adults moved in and it has been a nightmare since with their noise. They don't play music but they…

Builder problems - failed buildings control inspection
TLDR: We spent £65k for the first stages of a £400-500k extension and renovation project on a builder I will call Paul. However the buildings inspector says that most of his work does not meet the required standards and will need to be taken down and redone. I’m worried that he has also breached the rules on my home…

Metal garage door snapped cable
This in picture has happened to my garage door. Picture is from inside garage. The sort of rod cable on left seems to have snapped off from the thin wire to the right. It will still open and close to a point , say a quarter but is then very resistant and I don't want to force it any further as I don't know what's going on.…

I really need some advice
I'm in a bit of a situation. The neighbour at the back removed a metal railing between our gardens without asking us. Our garden is about a foot higher than his; he had large trees that held my soil and rubble in place but he removed the trees last year. It wasn't a problem because there was a foot of land horizontally…

Removing permanent marker from keyboard keys.
HP Pavilion 14-ce3501na. Previous owner had poor eyesight, so used permanent marker to add graphics. How to remove?! I have tried 'sticker remover' as I had some - it didn't touch it. The only other solvent I have current access to is white spirits (oh, and petrol. And whisky - worth a shot?), which I am happy to try as I…
