How to live without heating - save £000s
I am sorry to read Martin Lewis say he fears people will die because a lot of people cannot afford heating. I agree but regard it as sad. The Government, Councils, charities and other public bodies could do a lot more to advise people on what to wear so many of those people should be able to stay perfectly warm without any…

Replacing a smart meter comms hub
Smart metering expertise required, if anyone has it. The comms hub on my smart meter was replaced a week ago but the replacement could not be commissioned. The WAN light flashes ever 5 seconds but the HAN light is solid green, which I think confirms this (I'm in the north on Arqiva LRR). I am thrashing around trying to…

MSE Collective Switch Oct 2025 foiled by incorrect Profile Class in National Database
A very good afternoon to everyone. Long-time lurker and first time poster ; I note quite a few stories about those databases and profile classes in the forum! Like many others, my wife and I were keen to use the MSE Energy Collective Switch in Martin's (early October?) email. Key switching points: * we decided to move to…

Tomato Energy (Electric Only Supplier) - Too Good To Be True ?
Looking at Tomato Energy for our electric only property. They are offering 12M FIXED Tariffs which are based on your chosen lifestyle - with Daily Standing Charge as low as 40.82p The tariff Im looking at gives me a Unit Rate of; 00:00 to 06:00 = 5.00p 06:00 to 09:30 = 23.16p 09:30 to 11:30 = 13.37p 11:30 to 22:00 = 23.16p…

Ecotricity EcoFixed - 1 year Oct 25 v1
Worth checking this out. It doesn’t pay commission to MSE etc so doesn’t get a lot of attention, but it’s way cheaper than the MSE Big Switch recommendations. Saved £300 on a gas switch, and that was from a pretty competitive Octopus fix.

Are EV and ToU tariffs unfair to other electricity customers?
I have started this thread to respond to a comment on a different thread ( Martin Lewis: Standing charges update risks households paying more) without taking that thread off topic That is an interesting (and valid) point. Ultimately if every individual optimised their consumption to achieve the lowest import price on a ToU…

Payment of energy invoices by direct debit?
I get the impression that it is possible to find energy contracts where you pay on receipt of an invoice with the payment being taken by direct debit. However, I have not been able to find any. Can anyone help with this?

Home Energy.
Has anyone any information on the above company. I am thinking of changing energy to them as on the Cheap Energy Clubs website it is £184 cheaper per annum for me.You need to look at all suppliers on the CEC website to get comparisons not what they can switch you to.

NGN want to replace gas service pipe and move meter outside
Northern Gas are currently out in the street replacing the old pipes with new plastic ones. But they also want to replace my service pipe, which would also mean moving my gas meter from under my stairs all the way to the front of the house. The guy who popped round had a look and said they would have to dig a trench…

Upgrade old Night storage heaters, come off E7 and get "German" electric storage, or back to Gas
Hi, I see there are plenty of similar threads so apologies for an repetition. I have just bought a 2 bed flat. The previous owners ripped out the Gas Boiler and central heating and went on to Economy 7, and 2 Dimplex NSHs and 2 Dimplex convection heaters in bedrooms. These are old and only manual control. I work all day so…

Help with oil boiler efficiency with Hive
Hi all We moved house earlier this year into a 4 bed detached 1970's house. We had the (ancient) central heating system completely overhauled - new rads, new boiler, new hot water cylinder and we installed Hive to control it all. We moved in in February so had some experience with it last winter, but I never got to grips…

Elnur HHR Storage Heater Review, Smart Controls & Storage Efficiency Tests
Hi, I've just bought a used Elnur ECOHHR20 storage heater off eBay to replace an electric radiator in my hall way. I've also made a control box to connect it in which gives it smart features. It's proving to be an interesting project so I thought I'd share details here. This post is a bit of a mixed bag, including a review…

EV tariff with British Gas
I have an EV and i have been trying for the last month to get British Gas to allow me to move onto the EV tariff that they advertise everywhere. I have a smart meter and an EV which i was under the impression were the only qualifying requirements. They are simply saying that i don't qualify. Does anyone have any…

Switching Energy Suppliers - Opening/Closing Meter Readings
Quick question as this feels like an overcharging conspiracy between energy providers when switching suppliers without a smart meter. On 11 September 2025, my switch from Octopus to Outfox went through. On 10 September, I had submitted my actual meter readings to both. On receiving my first bill today from Outfox, my…

Utilities supplier for students - private rent less than a year
Our children are embarking on student life, and private rent for each year is often 48 or 50 weeks. Buy the time they've moved in, and got signed up, they can't commit to a 12 month fix or whatever. Is there any advice on the cheapest options for them, and how to find out? Cheap energy club seems to assume the home is for…

Anyone else got an email from Utilita saying they are moving you to EDF?
I got an email this morning telling me that my account was being moved to EDF, apparently because I am a 'credit customer' I pay my bill monthly by variable DD. I was looking at changing to see if i could get a cheaper rate a while ago but to be honest the savings were minimal so not worth the bother really. I have a smart…

Overloaded Goods cause of Energy Spikes?
I have seen several emails relating to energy spikes over the years, but who is accountable? Over the years had issues with goods being overloaded so used extension leads with surge protection and cut down my usage to the point I hardly used my electricity. But was paying over £200+ before. A contractor told me there was…
