highway drains
In general, are highway drains, cleanwater (surface water) only, taking the water to rivers etc? Or do they feed into the main sewer which also carries household sewerage to the water treatment works? Alanobrian, perhaps you could look on your A2 map to see what the case is for your street?

Septic Tank - any rules I should know?
Hello There! I've recently moved to a new home and now am the proud(?!) owner of a septic tank. I know very little about these systems - my understanding is that a septic tank has a secondary chamber and liquids soak away. Can anyone tell me if there are any rules I should know? ie can I use bleach in the sinks & toilets…

Dual-flush conversion kits?
Some of you may have noticed that I have recently been trying to reduce my water usage, on a separate thread. Anyways, I started looking for a dual-flush conversion kit for the loos in my house, which I know would make a big saving. So, why aren't there any out there? well, none in the UK. SURELY there must be a killing to…

Save water (and £16 per person per year)
I've seen the Interflush device in a couple of threads, but I think it's worthy of a thread of its own. It saves water by stopping the flush when you tell it to, rather than flushing a set amount. They are better than a brick or bottle in the cistern, as you can flush the full amount if you need. They are better than a…

Cold water clothes washing
I thought to introduce filtered rainwater into my auto machine to keep costs down, but it's not working out as I'd hoped. Has anyone any experience of doing this. My machine seems to think the added water is left over from the last wash, and empties before starting afresh with bought water.

local sewer/water maps
Just spoke to someone from the water company, he obviously had a computer map infront of him where he could see all the houses, streets and sewers layout. Is there anywhere I can see this information too, in the library maybe?

Hi, After several attempts to get the company (South Staffordshire Water) to explain to me what i was being charged for on my bill (explanation of their charges, Rateable Value, units used etc.) today i finally got half an explanation - which seemed to make sense. Get a Water Meter Installed?
My fiancee and I have just moved into our first home, and our monthly water rates are £32.50 This seems an awful lot to me and I was debating the merits of getting a meter installed... our situation is as follows: 14 showers per week (on average) 3 washing machine loads per week 3 dishwasher loads per week ("A" rated…

I am allowed to read n=my gas and electricty meter but undersatnd that I am not permitted to read the water meter for myself. Is that fact? I know it might be difficult if one hasn;t a key to opend the cover in the road where it is located. If you don't know you can't control or verify sated usage.

Why is cost of water is differnet in differnet area from same company
Applies to Thames Water, not sure about others While checking up why I'm paying so much for water I found out that depending on were you live you will pay a differnet amount on the rate per pound, varying from 49p up to 63p. I know water isn't yet on a national grid system, but would have thought it would have been the…

Getting it ALL back from Severn Trent?
I was not surprised that Severn Trent Water was shown to be grossly overcharging their customers. This January I received a bill that was 38% higher than for the same period in 2005! My house usage should be ~ constant. I wrote to complain about this but only received a standard reply, citing cost increases, etc. I felt…

Claiming Money from Severn Trent
When we moved into the house Severn Trent insisted that our monthly direct debit should be £25 to cover the amount of water we would use (from their calculations) We managed to haggle them down to £20 a month, however in the past year we have only used £120 of water (metered) With paying £20 a month that means we should be…
