Hi

I have just got my water bill and it is a lot more than I expected  This time last year I used 31 cub metres in 6 months. For the same time this year I have used 73 cub metres! They were all actual readings (that I even checked myself) and I don't think I have changed anything.

Is 73 cub metres high for a single person? Could it be right? I have a 15min shower every day, use washing machine twice a week, flush loo 4 or 5 times a day and wash up by hand once a day.

I really don't see how I have doubled my useage in a year , but they would charge £70 if they test metre and find it's fine :o

  • We are a family of four, on the SoLow tariff with Anglian water - in our last bill we used 55 units in 6 months; with 2 small children, washing machine on at least once a day, same with dishwasher, showers etc, but children do share bath and we never use fresh water on the garden, just rainwater

have you a leak on your property past the site of the meter?
  • I don't have a garden, so no water gets used there. I live in flats and the meter is right by the front door of the block, so I don't see how there can be a leak between meter and my flat. Next time I go out for a few hours I am going to take a before and after reading. If a family of 4 use 55 units then something is really wrong here!

You are not the only one, our use has apparently increased from 44 units last year to 97 this year. We have just 2 showers each a week and I do the equivilent of 1 full wash load a week. we save rainwater for the garden and flush the toilet with the water from the shower or basin. I have just had a bill for £220. We have been away for at least a month during that period, I had meant to read the meter before we went but forgot.

I phoned the water board yesterday, guess what the computers are down for essential maintence, just when the bills come out!!! I will be phoning tomorrow and insisting that they check the supply, the meter is in the pavement ousdie and has been put in in such a position that it is very difficult to read..... but with the aid of a magnifying galss we did yesterday. I am starting to keep a record of the readings.

  • Thanks csarina, please can you keep me informed with what they say? I have just used no water for 4 hours and read the meter before and after. It had not moved so I assume that rules out a leak, unless it's small.

If you used 55 units in 6 months you my be better of on the normal tarrif as you only save money if using under 75 units a year on SoLow any more than that and you will be payingmore than you need

I already have glasses thank you.........the meter has been placed so it is turned away from the road, so you read it upside down, very awkward if there is a fence in the way, it is also quite a long way down................

Re the water board, I have currently been on hold for the water board for 3/4 of an hour, got fed up and put the phone down, as I suspected they are inundated with calls re the bills that went out at the weekend. Will be trying tonight. I have put an email through to them, they say they aim to answer in 3 WORKING DAYS not at all satisfactory but then what can you expect from a company whose whole outlook is share holder based not customer based as it should be.
