Right, I just read my water meter, used 10 liters of water exactly, and then read the meter again... it hadn't moved!? Do they move stright away or is there a delay? Am I correct in thinking the smallest red digit should move by 1 when you use 10 liters? Please help!

One cubic metre = 1,000 litres, if that helps.

Thanks George. So the 1st red digit would measure hundreds and the 2nd one measures tens? That was my logic. So I would expect 10 litres to move the 2nd digit on one. I'm starting to think it's not my meter

I have just come off the phone from the water company re our massive bill we had at the weekend, it has taken me all day to get through to them....... after a rather heated conversation they have agreed to send someone out to check for underground leaks, they wanted us to do the tests ourselves, no way..... if they want someone to grovel on the floor in the dark to take a meter reading, turn the stop tap off in the house for 8 hours and then grovel to read the meter again, they can damn well do it themselves. The stop tap in the house is at the back of the cooker........ don't ask me why its there, but thats where it is, I guess at some time the sink has been moved along under the window, thats the only explanation I can think of.
We now ait for the meter man to come!!!
We are with Severn Trent, I must have spent well over £2 on calls today trying to get through to them, its very frustrating, they wanted me to do the tests, I told them to get lost, I am over 60 and am not going to grovel on the pavement to read their meter. neither am I going to pay the bill........ we have not used the water, am beginning to wonder if we are paying for next doors water as well. Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0 -
All you have to do is turn the stop tap off indoors and see if the meter in the pavement is spinning if it is you have a leak.0

please read what I have written above, I am too old to go scrabbling on the pavement in the dark to read the meter and to turn off the water we have to move our GAS cookerWas 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0 -
The water employee might not be allowed to move your cooker or touch your internal stop tap , i am not supposed to move cookers, fridges, washers etc.
Maybe you have a neighbour that could help, im only making suggestions so you dont have to wait for someone to come along from ST0 -

Thanks for that; i do keep on top of it and check my bills when they come in and it is usually cheaper for us to stay on the SOLOW, BUT, no harm in checking again, thanksBuy nothing for a month challenge - Oct

Do the check over a longer time period. It could be that other flats in the block are tapping into your supply. ALternatively, is there an outside tap that could be plumbed into your water system?

Knock on the door at 1.30pm. Man from the water board to check our meter. Asked if we had anything drawing water in the house, no, right I need to turn off the stop tap, we manhandled the cooker out and he turned the supply off and then repaired to the meter, yes it is still running, you HAVE A LEAK!!!!
We now await a man with a device for finding the leak!!!! They will let us know when they are coming........ we then have to submit 3 monthly reading for them to ascertain our consumption, then the bill will be adjusted.........
The chap re-positioned the dial so we can now read it without having to stick our bum halfway up the fence..... it could take a while to sort out, but it will get sorted..........
So the moral of the story is COMPLAIN if you think you have a problem.......... will keep you updated on what happens next. Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0
