How soon do train companies have to announce any engineering works over New Year?
I'd like to book a short New year trip/package in the UK but I don't drive (and wouldn't drive long distances even if I could). I much prefer train travel and have a senior railcard but don't want to risk choosing a destination only to find that I can't get there and so lose money on my booking.

How to cut costs of weekly trains between Manchester and London
I'm a newbie to this and was wondering whether anyone had any tips to keep the cost down of a weekly trip between Manchester and London, leaving about 9am Monday morning and returning late Tuesday evening on Avanti trains. It's a non-negotiable (trust me, we've tried) commute for work until a new job has been found, so it…

Rail strikes trainline booking
I have recently had the unfortunate experience of dealing with the trainline customer service people. Booked tickets for 11 of us to go to Manchester. Had to use 2 bookings as you can only book a limited amount of seats in one booking. Paid £1.99 fee per booking. Trains are on strike so I assumed we would get a full…

Summary of Train and Tube strikes July 2023
I needed to create a summary for some travel planning I was doing, thought it would be useful to share --happy to take corrections, have used several news sources which give inconsistent answers and there isn't an official TfL list for tube strikes that I can find (some operators have posted rail strike days to their…

unfair train penalty
Can someone advise me of where do I go from here. Long story short- I travelled to airport for a funeral. We boarded the train, phone died as we left in such a rush and when approached at the gate- of course I didn't have tickets. I wasn't worried as I put the appeal against with proof of purchase through Paypal( receipt)…

My son needs a season ticket. Falkirk - Edinburgh
My 18yr old son has just secured his first job. He needs to travel from Falkirk to Edinburgh for the next 4yrs. Has anyone had any experience with season tickets? The advice on here seems to be season tickets down south not Scotland. My next-door neighbour thinks if he has a Santander account he'll get a discount. Advice…

Split ticketing on train
Split ticketing has some disadvantages. Recently went from Exeter to Alnmouth. Saved £30 but ended up with 8 rickets for 8 consecutive legs on the same train. Each ticket having a different reseved seat! Train was 58 mins late so entitled to delay repay. Unfortunately delay occurred on last three legs so was only able to…

Queries re. ticket bought via LNER App
When Mum visits me by train, she usually buys her own tickets at her local station - (1) into London, and (2) from London to me. She has a senior railcard and gets a card ticket that goes through the ticket machines in London / the underground. We are investigating whether I can get her ticket for her, via the LNER App,…

RMT tube strikes July 2023 - dates
Most of the news articles, including the BBC, say that there will be strikes on the tubes from 23 July - 28 July, with it not yet confirmed "which groups of workers will strike on which day, nor whether the action will last for a solid six days." However, some of the papers, including the Guardian and the i paper, say that…

Cycle To Work Schemes
Hi everyone, if this isn't the right place to write what I'm about to post then any Admins feel free to move or delete, etc. This is about a possible word of warning for employees either in or considering signing up to hire a bicycle under the Government's "Cycle to Work" scheme. My previous employer joined a scheme and I…

Northern Rail - Magistrate summons - Am I in the wrong?
In November I was travelling to uni from Skipton to Leeds. Uni starts at 10am so I like to get a train which gets into Leeds around 09:30 to allow me time to walk to the venue. I booked an advanced single that morning for the 08:43 train. This was the faster train which came from Carlisle. It was announced there was a…

Question regarding use of tickets bought with a senior railcard to exit ticket barriers
I have only had the above since March so haven't used it many times yet. I have noticed though that, on arrival at my destination, the ticket barrier doesn't fully accept my actual ticket. It flashes orange not red but the gates don't open. I have had to show my ticket to a staff member who has then let me through. I have…

Charged twice (2 x £91.80) on the Trainline!
Hi Today I had to book a last minute trip for tomorrow. To my horror I have been charged twice on the Trainline after I tried booking an off peak return that should have cost £91.80. But the page timed out and I had to start again. The timeout happens a lot because I am dyslexic and can;t rush but I have never been charged…

Taxi/cab price comparison?
I'm going to a wedding in West London, and need a cab back to Surrey -- about 20 miles, just after midnight. Is there an easy way to find the cheapest cab firm? Or do I have to ring round and get individual quotes?I've never used Uber -- it looks like you can reserve a cab, but can't see how much it will actually cost in…

Any cheap way to commute by tube?
I work in Zone 1 and plan to get into the office for at least 4 days per week in peak hours. I am using a National Rail season ticket at £85.70 per month which covers most of the North London Line and the Thameslink route between Finsbury Park / West Hampstead / Herne Hill, which is extremely good value as I'm using this…
