Real world output from 4kWp?
I've been looking into panel specs and the advertised kWp assumes that you have 1000w/sqm hitting them, when you drop down to 800w/sqm you lose around 100kwp per panel! Does that therefore make the real world output of a 4kWp system around 3000w max assuming you only get 800w/sqm of sunlight on a 10 panel system?

I have had a quick look in threads but have not seen much info so can anybody point me in the right direction (mse or otherwise) for good information as to what is available on the market for smart ev charging? I am aware of a few systems but could do with info on pros and cons of systems that will work autonomously at…

I've seen that these seem to be in limited areas, at least with octopus energy. When will widespread V2G be available?

Switch to ground source heat pump with RHI
I have moved to a cottage in the Forest of Dean which has an oil boiler with oil tank in the garden. I was looking into the possibility of switching to a ground/air source heat pump. I spoke to a local service - Forest Eco Systems - which installs them, and based on my property's EPC they suggest that I could get RHI equal…

Solar Payback
So I know that these days it's really not feasiable for these panels to save you a considerable amount of money now that the FiT scheme has gone and I've tried to base my calculations on realistic use. Would you say 30 years ROI is a sensible assumption on a system costing £4650?

Heat pump hot water cylinders
Does anyone here have, or have seriously considered installing, a heat pump hot water cylinder? Something like the Tesy Aqua Thermica (other brands are available)? At first glance it looks an interesting idea. A regular hot water cylinder, complete with coil for CH or solar HW, but with a small (2kW thermal) air-source heat…

Best export only tariff?
I emailed my current energy provider Utility Point and they laughably only offer 0.0001p/kwh I have seen OVO offer 4p/kwh, this isn't as high as bulb or Octopus but you don't need to import from them to get that rate. Is this the best option as my fixed rate is 13.5p on utility point until Feb next year!

Elster A100C failure - Advice & Clarification Please
Hi, My Elster generation meter is currently "frozen" - displaying a reading that is from a few weeks ago. The Inverter is working, and I've tried a full restart of the system (isolate everything, turn it all off, then on and de-isolate) but the meter is still showing the same reading. The red light is flashing periodically…

Problem with tenants energy provider and being able to get remedial work done in order to get a cert
I have a situation I need advice on. In order to comply with the new electricity legislation for landlord to supply an Eirc, my electrician needs to be able to stop the flow of electricity to the meter. The tenant, without my knowledge had a smart meter fitted, but no isolation switch was fitted. Without an isolation…

Rainwater Harvesting - is it Green & Ethical?
I have been toying whit the idea of collecting rainwater in a big tank and using it to flush the toilets as well as to water the garden during the persistent dry spells that seem to be increasingly common. This is sufficiently expensive that the payback period would be huge as to be almost certainly not money saving.…

Mixer taps - really wasteful?
I've recently moved to a house with a mixer tap in the kitchen. I feel it's really wasteful. If I want a drink of fresh water I end up running it for maybe half a washing up bowl full before it's nice and cold and conversely, if I want hot water to wash up with I have to run off the cold first - I certainly can't have a…

Rechargeable batteries worthwhile for smoke alarms?
We have five wireless smoke alarms which are battery-powered and each take a 9V battery (the rectangular type). At present buying cheap supermarket non-branded alkaline non-rechargeable replacement batteries for these works out at about £6 a year on replacements because the batteries last about two years. So of course…
