Got a bit of a shock when opening our new tariff this morning. The daytime right has almost trebled, 39p, while overnight has gone up four fold, 22p!
Just how are the majority of UK residents going to manage.
Thank goodness the sun is shining.

Have you switched from Octopus Go to their Economy 7 tariff by mistake?

Afraid not, it is their Go Faster rate they have offered. Actually there is a slightly better option called "Loyal Octopus 12M Fixed" with tariff's of daytime at 38.04p, overnight 5hrs at 19.9p & SDC @ 24.1p.

Last year we consumed 9564kWh's so assuming we had no solar and paid daytime rate for it all in the year to come it works out to a staggering £3,726.10.

Looking at it from a slightly different perspective, then for every hour of solar we use we are saving 38.0p and while the previous difference between day and night rate was circa 9p, it's now 18p. Perhaps we should be rejoicing.
Afraid I can't find myself in anything of a celebratory frame of mind as it doesn't help those less fortunate than ourselves who have neither the time or money to invest in navigating the pros and cons of Solar, never mind battery storage.

Their renewal email is misleading. Lots of people are currently renewing Go and Go Faster at 7.5p off peak and around 30p peak depending on area.

The rates you mentioned above are not the current Go Faster rates. You need to go back to them and let them know you want to renew on Go Faster. However, if you had a slot starting at 20:30 or for 3 hours of cheap rate, they are no longer available, so you will need to switch to different timings.
Are you on the Octopus Smart forum? It is worth being on there. We had an issue with a relatives account and an Octopus employee on there got the issue sorted out for us by the day after we raised it.

  • Many thanks for advice guys, I had questioned the increases but learning of the Go Faster rates now showing on the website gives me further armour to contest those prices indicated to me.
I await their response better prepared than I was previously.  :)

Regardless of the outcome, could this be a sign of where go faster rates are heading post April? Sadly I am on the ovo trial until June or I would be trying to sign up for the tariff right now.
    I think....

No, they could set them higher already as it's a fixed tariff and therefore not subject to the price cap.

The Flexible Octopus tariff looks interesting if you don’t have batteries to time shift and have a decent amount of solar to charge your car and heat your water with. My Go Faster tariff ends in a fortnight so if it is available I might go for that. At the moment I use GO Faster 1.30 to 6.30 to charge my car, heat my water and run wall mounted ASHPs for a couple of hours but I can switch the water heating to the oil boiler in winter which is marginally cheaper than the new GO Faster cheap rate and put the ASHPs on later but for a shorter time. I would pay about 7p/KWh more to charge my car (around 1500 hrs) but save 8.7p/kWh on my daytime usage which is probably around 3000kWh (we cook by electricity). I need to do some proper sums.

The lower I can get my daytime rate then the more comfortable I am using electricity during the day which improves the quality of life.

  • Interesting to gear Coastalwatch.
My go faster fixed term ended two days ago, got the email saying I was moving from go faster nov19 to go faster nov19.

Checked my account and still showing 4.5p and 14.2p

I'm thinking it's going to change on Monday, but obviously hoping not.
