Is Solar PV still worth it?
I am seriously considering Solar PV but I am not sure if it is still worth it? Having received a quote for 12 panels (5KW output) with a sofar 6.0 inverter & 10KWH battery at £9,000. I use roughly 10,000 KWH of electricity a year (fully electric house) It would make a big dint into that but £9,000 is 8 years worth of…

Hi I have a single phase residential supply. I have been quoted £4500 with VAT by DNO to install 3Phase... I don't have an EV car but eventually will have one..so I want to delay the install of 3 Phase by DNO. However, I am installing Solar PV+Battery. ( 6KWH+ 13-16KW battery) Question: 1. Can I have 3 Phase Inverter…

Solar panel quote
Hi Everyone I know this has been done a million times but I just wanted an opinion. I have been quoted £6995 for a 5kw array with 4.8kw of storage. Is this a fair price?. On had such a spec be found for less? From my calculations this is a very good investment financially and in terms of reducing my carbon foot print. I…

Faulty Gas Boiler - Should I replace with a heat pump?
My 35 year old gas boiler has finally given up. I have the choice of replacing it with a modern combi-boiler or make use of the government incentives and install an air source heat pump. (My house is a small 2 bed semi, if that makes any difference?) For environmental reasons I would love to move away from fossil fuel. But…

Solar PV panels tariff help
Hello people. Looking for some clarification of my PV panel tariffs I bought a bungalow in November with 8 panels on the south facing roof. The sale was done through a solicitor acting as power of attorney and there was hardly any info supplied (about anything !). The panels were fitted in 2011. It took me a few weeks to…

Has anyone ever applied to the DNO to install extra solar?
Apparently you're limited to about 5.7kw of panels (3.6kw? inverter) unless you send an application, which takes months, and I was told they just say 'yes' or 'no'. I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with this, so I might be able to figure out if it's feasible or not.

My OctoChargeCalc - Octopus Agile pricing tool
Not sure why, but my original and rather lengthy "My Octopus Agile & Go tariff analysis/comparison website" thread has been removed? Don't this understand as it was the place we all talked about Agile / Go etc? Very strange. Ah well...... onwards and upwards......…

Green Homes Grant Installers which actually do heating controls
The scheme controls for heating controls such as thermostats and thermostatic radiator valves as a secondary measure. I have yet to find an installer in the East Midlands that actually does heating controls under the scheme. It seems that this because the installers needs to have a City and Guilds Heating Controls…

Green Homes Grant - Solar Thermal - Maximum Voucher Value?
For homes with an existing airing cupboard and hot water cylinder, the typical cost for solar therma,l seems to be about £6 000, for 2m squared collector and 200 litre, twin coil cylinder. It seems that many of the the installers, don't want to do systems which currently have a combi-boiler, this is partly due to technical…

Compostable plastic bags and cling film.
I absolutely hate any plastic food coverings that aren’t recyclable and reuse small plastic food bags (for sandwiches and freezer etc) over and over, of course washing out between uses. My wife was browsing through the Lakeland catalogue and pointed out they now sell compostable cling film and bin bags (although the latter…

Water consumption
I have an interest in the environment-don't want to waste water. I read the following:"you will lengthen the life of your garbage disposal by running it a few times a week even if you don't have food to put down." What are your thoughts? I'm not sure this is the right forum to ask this. If not, which website/link would you…

Green home grant on shared ownership - not allowed!
Me and my wife own 40% of the house. The housing association owns 60% and didn't give us permission to have a solar thermal panel installed through Green Home Grant on the ground of "Under the terms of your lease you cannot make any alteration to the external of the property."I am disgusted as this is a FREE upgrade to the…

Lab grown food - is it Green? and is it Ethical?
Rather than muscle in on the ‘Green and Ethical Food’ thread,
this subject deserves a separate thread as it is bound to become a hot topic in
the years to come. There have been many articles about ‘Man made Food’ and the
highly respected environmentalist George Monboit – much loved(by some) in this
forum! - wrote an…

FIT Payments via Direct Debit/Bank Transfer?
Hi all. The previous owner of my house had his FIT payments coming from British Gas, and at the time I opted to stay with them. They've been fine, except the fact it's a bit of pain having to cash a cheque each time to claim the money. Can anybody recommend a provider that pays via direct debit/bank transfer? Also, is…
