Water consumption
I have an interest in the environment-don't want to waste water. I read the following:"you will lengthen the life of your garbage disposal by running it a few times a week even if you don't have food to put down." What are your thoughts? I'm not sure this is the right forum to ask this. If not, which website/link would you…

Hi Everyone, I'm new to the forum and after some help if you more knowledgeable folks can help  I'm thinking about getting Solar PV and a Battery for the house and recently I've seen a price from DeegeSolar for 16 PV Panels and a 8Kw GivEnergy battery and inverter for £8,600 Fitted (although that seems to have gone…

Green home grant on shared ownership - not allowed!
Me and my wife own 40% of the house. The housing association owns 60% and didn't give us permission to have a solar thermal panel installed through Green Home Grant on the ground of "Under the terms of your lease you cannot make any alteration to the external of the property."I am disgusted as this is a FREE upgrade to the…

Lab grown food - is it Green? and is it Ethical?
Rather than muscle in on the ‘Green and Ethical Food’ thread,
this subject deserves a separate thread as it is bound to become a hot topic in
the years to come. There have been many articles about ‘Man made Food’ and the
highly respected environmentalist George Monboit – much loved(by some) in this
forum! - wrote an…

FIT Payments via Direct Debit/Bank Transfer?
Hi all. The previous owner of my house had his FIT payments coming from British Gas, and at the time I opted to stay with them. They've been fine, except the fact it's a bit of pain having to cash a cheque each time to claim the money. Can anybody recommend a provider that pays via direct debit/bank transfer? Also, is…

Off grid and solar
Hello, new to this site and hoping for some good info. We are in the process of sorting out a rural self build, we looked into connecting to the DNO but it will cost approx £7,000 (and we have to hire a digger and dig our own trench!) So looking at plan b. On doing some research we can get a decent 3-4 k solar system with…

Is heat pump technology improving or getting cheaper?
Interested to hear everyone's thoughts on this. Seems that heat pumps are the great hope for getting the population off burning fossil fuels, but there isn't much take-up for some practical reasons. From what I've read, getting an air source heat pump installed along with changing all your radiators in an existing property…

Mixing solar thermal with solar PV
Hi, Apologies if what follows has been answered elsewhere on the forum or makes me sound like a self-confessed solar novice (which I am!). We have been interested in installing solar panels for a while and have finally got round to giving it some serious consideration through the grants available for solar thermal through…

£/KWh Recommendation for battery > 8KW with > = 90% DOD
Hi In the process of choosing a battery to store electricity at a cheaper rate and use during the day ( avoiding peak 4 pm - 7 pm). After reading several posts/forums still undecided. Ideally would like to have storage up to 16KW, with a peak output of 5KW, 10 Year Warranty. I would like to have recommendations on the…

Mixergy hot water tank
Just wondering if anyone has experience of these and what that experience has been. I'm planning to get soon as part of our drive to decarbonise/electrify and have had a few quotes back. We currently have a gas heated tank that's 20+ years old and not the best insulated. Aim is to get this with an electric element so no…

Considering a second Solar system on a 3phase supplied house
We are considering installing a second solar array on a roof we originally rejected mainly because it is very visible at the front of the house but also because it has considerable shading issues in winter. Our existing array sits on Phase 1 with a single phase inverter. Looking at our energy usage we will use the great…

Costing / Reliability : Solar Panel and Inverter Choices.
Hey...decided to get solar panels...done reads on the forums and on the websites. I am also getting a few quotes, they all vary and with varied recommendations. [Planning to install around 8KW Solar Panel on 50msq flat roof ( no shading), Annual consumption 7000Kwh] *****Aim of this post to get a quote on the following…

Upgrade to existing 2011 solar panel system?
We are the lucky owners of a 9 year old system split between SSE and WSW roof. The larger array is on the WSW roof and has issues with shading from a chimney. Having said that the system has been great and paid for itself compliantly last year. What are you allowed to do with an existing system - presumably not replace the…

Considering solar PV installation
First time poster, but lurking for a while as usual. I'm looking at the possibility of solar PV panels, and any advice would be welcome. Located in Derbyshire; house has roofs pitched at approximately 30 degrees, facing east-ish (probably about 100 degrees from north) and west-ish (about 80 degrees from north). Plenty of…

Energy company not accepting solar FiT readings
My grandfather who is having problems with the energy company not accepting his FiT readings and I was wondering if I am going about it the right way. In November 2018 the energy company refused to accept his readings without a photograph as they had been higher than normal due to the heatwave. He is in his 90s and doesn't…
