Hybrid boiler v combi boiler
I previously posted re changing my boiler for the most energy efficient / cost effective alternative and came to the conclusion that a highly efficient gas combi boiler would be the best solution right now. I have just been reading about hybrid boilers eg by Vaillant. Does anyone have any experience of these? Are they…

Cavity wall insulation can't be fitted - ASHP issues...
Hi all, With all this talk of switching off gas boilers and everyone moving to ASHP over the next few decades it has brought me back to my own property. A couple of years ago we had a survey for CWI, being one of only 2 properties in the street that didn't have it fitted. Survey all went well and installation was booked.…

Solar PV + storage advise
Hello, wishing to tap into the solar gurus knowledge. I've been looking around various installers to get solar pv, but almost all of them seem aware of the agile tariff but don't seem too experienced with it or are just middlemen to the actual installers who cant answer technical questions. I am in West Yorkshire and have…

Solaredge battery
I see Solaredge are doing there own battery now. As it is a DC coupled presumably it is more efficient than using a separate AC inverter. https://midsummerwholesale.co.uk/buy/storedge/solaredge-energybank-10kWh It probably does not stack up quite yet. Although if you got it with 5% VAT as part of a solar install it could…

Ground source heat pumps
In light of recent announcements by the government, does any one know how to access the grants for GSHP? I seem to be going round in circles on the government website. Thanks

Upgrading heating system / energy - best option
I am moving to a new property soon and the gas combi boiler
will need to be changed at some point as it is reasonably old. I am looking to reduce
energy costs as well as carbon footprint. I will be having loft insulation
upgraded and will check the cavity wall insulation and get it installed or
upgraded if needed. I may…

Solar install
We are looking at solar install and battery storage and have received 3 quotes which are all similar but advice seems to differ. We have an east roof and west roof with no shading so want to maximise the roof area if possible. So this looks around 8-10 panels per side. The quotes have suggested different panel sizes from…

Imbalance of heating upstairs and downstairs
Apologies in advance if this is a silly question to ask but Google has genuinely not given me anything 🙈 So we’ve recently had our downstairs opened up and renovated to one large reception area (victorian 2 reception rooms knocked through and open to hallway/stairs) and in the process we’ve installed some very efficient…

Get your heat pump quick?
The Renewable Heat Incentive scheme is set to close on 31st March 2022 to be replaced by a £5,000 grant towards the cost of an Air Source Heat Pump https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-58959045 . Although the RHI scheme only pays you once a quarter over 7 years, you are likely to get a lot more in total than £5,000. It…

Conservatory roof replacement - Is this worth it?
Just had a letter “important information about your conservatory” no name or address, so a cold call in effect. it’s from Greenspace UK who say I can replace the roof of my conservatory with an insulated alternative with a “substantial subsidy”. So does anyone know a) is it kosher? b) is it the best way of getting any…

Keeping your fridge cooler money saving tip
I'm single and often, for long periods, my fridge has just the bare minimum in it. If I open the door to get something out, it's therefore losing a lot of its cooled air and is warming up. That's costing me money to then have it running to cool down again. I eat a fair bit of yogurt. The brand I use is sold in rectangular…

To optimise or not
Hi, After really struggling to get quotes, finally have got a decent quote for a non optimised 9kw system. But I'm struggling to decide whether to go for optimisers. I don't really have much shading on my roof, i have single roof which is south facing, I do have some trees on east and west, but these would only affect…

Calculating solar energy production vs usage
Hi all Sorry if this has been done before but i am new to solar. I had a 5.7kw array installed with pigeon proofing for £4950 which i dont not think is bad. Very pleased with it as om these sunny autumn days we are producing approx 17kwh and 7kwh on very dull days. Looking forward to summer. We got a phev the next day so…

It’s low humidity & a decent windspeed that makes a good drying day
If you’re trying to be green & moneysaving & choosing a good day to dry washing outdoors on the washing line there’s three things to consider • at least a few hours where the forecast is for less than 5% probability of rain • a decent wind speed forecast (15 mph plus?) • a forecast of low humidity, preferably less than…

Air to air versus air to water heat pumps
Do air to air heat pumps produce as much heat as air to water and does the same efficiency apply ? Also, does the currently available funding apply to both or just air to water systems ?

Pigeon proofing on PV a requirement?
The panels on the houses around me don't appear to have any pigeon proofing and it doesn't look like they have any issues with nesting, how many people here have issues with pigeons? It's playing on my mind whether I should request pigeon proofing or save the money.

Acceptable Solar Panel quote for install 1.45/w ?
Just got a quote for 15 panel install for £8k, that works out at 1.45 per watt. Given the current situation is this the sort of price i should expect, I'm still waiting for other quotes but its taken ages to get someone to actually quote

Shouldn't we be considering ethics as well as environment and money saving?
I welcome MSE's email explaining what happens now that my carefully chosen Pure Planet energy account has been taken over by Shell... a company with an apalling environmental and human rights record (see for example https://www.fairplanet.org/dossier/eco-crimes-shell-and-the-niger-delta/). Needless to say, I'll be…
