Yet another Solar Panel quote!!

Hi all

As with a fair few others I'm considering solar panels (just moved house & likely to be in this one until carried out).

I've got my 1st quote in which goes as follows:

4.38 kWp Solar PV Kit:
12 x JA Solar 365W Solar PV Modules
1 x Solis 4kW Single phase Solar PV Inverter
Mounting Kit to Suit:
Above Roof (Layout TBC)
Included:
Design and Installation. Cable, Cable Flashing, MC4 Connectors, Generation Meter. Testing
& Commissioning
Other:
DNO Application Included – does not include, if any, subsequent DNO costs/charges

Total inc VAT (@ 0%) £7,653.40

They have also quoted for a battery:

Alternative Option - Battery Storage System
Battery Kit:
GivEnergy 5.2kWh Hybrid Battery - 3.6kW
Included:
Cable flashing, Cable, Battery Connectors, Fusing, Storage Metering, Warning Labels
Design, Supply and Installation
Testing & Commissioning
Other:
DNO Application Included – does not include, if any, subsequent DNO costs/charges
Work will be carried out in accordance with the Home Energy Scotland loan conditions for
energy storage.

Sub Total ex VAT £5,713.99

I'm based up in the (sometimes) sunny north East of Scotland and I am waiting for a quote from another local company.

As my knowledge of solar power is limited in the extreme any advice about the quotation above would be much appreciated.

The gold standard price last year was £1 per kw for solar i.e. £4380 for your system. In the current market people are still getting quotes of less than £1.30 per kw so around £5700 for your system. So it looks very expensive.

Likewise you should be looking to pay not much more than £2 per kWh for battery storage. Which would put the additional cost of 3.6kwh of storage at £2600.

If you are getting storage at the same time as solar you would not expect to pay vat

In summary that quote is a rip off

    Hi there,

Seems quite expensive to me, I'd certainly be getting another few quotes for comparison.
Is that price for battery an addition to solar or as a standalone option without solar?

23 x 420W East/West split over two flat roof areas at 10 degrees inclination.
13 x 390W South spit over two flat roof areas at 5 to 20 degrees inclination.
6 x 390W south wall mounted at 90 degrees inclination.
7 x 390W West wall mounted at 90 degrees inclination.
    2 x 5 kW hybrid inverters
    4 x 9.5 kWh batteries (38 kWh total)

3.795 kWp Solar PV System. Capital of the Wolds

  • "Whole cost £2951.00"

... But if it is installed at the same time as the solar you can take off the other inverter.

Very true, and you would think the company would tell them that also.

Do you mean £200 per Is of battery storage? If you can tell me where you can buy it for £2 I'll throw you a bag of skittles as commission 😉

  • Yes. Good spot. Doh!

I was wrong on about 3 accounts. I was trying to say 2wh for £1. As in 5.2 kWh should be around £2600.

Although, as with panels, you would expect better value with bigger systems.

That makes sense yes, mine has worked out to around £1.12 per kw for the panels and £1.80 per watt for the batteries.

With the inverter recommended I am going to assume a single roof orientation installation.
It looks over the top, there is a lot of interest in solar panel installation and the whole process looks like a runaway train!

I did pay around 1.6£/Wp for a system installed over 4 roofs and micro inverters 3 months ago.

    Thanks all.

The panels are all going on one roof (2 story detached house) & if we went with the battery option they would be getting installed with the panels.

    Methinks I'll continue gathering quotes.

Given that this is a long term investment with no quick gain I wonder if it might be better to hold off a year or 2 until things settle down a bit??
