Japanese Acer cuttings
I have a lovely Japanese Acer that is about 5 ft tall. It just popped up in my garden one day so I just dug it up and popped it somewhere else and it has thrived. It has got loads of shoots coming from the lower stems - can I just cut a couple of these off and pot up and how?

Perennial weeds in paths around raised beds
Hi. This seems like a silly question but I will ask it anyway. I’ve laid out raised beds on my new allotment and am going to lay cardboard down on the paths for the time being, and cover with bark chips when funds allow. The whole plot was covered with cardboard over winter which did a good job of stopping many weeds. But…

Ratio of Sand to Compost?
I want to plant a lot more this year so will have to use containers. I have already used all my homemade compost on my raised beds so have purchased peat free compost for the containers. I remember my Grandad used to do container planting and would mix in sharp sand, but have no idea on ratios. A quick google brings up…

Daffs
A couple of years ago I layered several pots with bulbs - the idea being that I’d get succession of spring flowers. Never really worked (they all came up together) and this year it just looks a mess. So I think I’ll take the daffs out and move them into the garden proper. I know (or at least I think I know) that I’m not…

Plants at Lidl
Two branches of Lidl close to me have pink or red upright and trailing pelargoniums in now. Pack of 6 is £3.99. The plants look healthy and strong. I bought some in 2019, and quite a few are still going strong, despite being outside all winter (on the south coast so relatively mild here). I'm only buying new because I want…

Annual Foxgloves
I picked up a packet of these. It says the first annual foxglove. Quick to grow from winter sowing. Neat dwarf plants. Has anyone tried them? I'm wondering if there are any hints or tips on growing them. Dwarf, does that mean half height? Or are they tiddly?

Flowering Bulbs
Newbie gardener here. I've read April is a good month to plant summer flowering bulbs. What plants should I look for and where should I buy them (I bought a cheap mixed box of 80 bulbs one year, planted them and about 10 flowered). Any tips to ensure best results much appreciated.

Garden waste/rubbish
My parents garden has accumulated a large pile of branches and random non-green waste in a rear corner. What started as a small compost heap has morphed into a huge pile over 30+ years that would fill a small skip. I am in the process of separating the non-garden waste items which include old household items (curtains,…

New allotment- lack of compost for digging/planting.
Hello, I have recently taken on a half-sized allotment and am prepping the ground into separate beds. It has been well cultivated in the past and is a good texture, but I have no garden compost to dig in when planting hungry things -raspberries, asparagus at the moment. I could but bags of multi purpose compost and manure…

Peat-free potting-on compost
Hi all, I've had good luck germinating seeds on coco coir (which has the added benefit of being really easy to transport if you don't have a car) but I'm struggling to find a good peat-free compost for potting on. As I understand it, coco coir is low nutrient and so really only suitable for the fist step. I've tried a…

New Lawn
Hi. we recently bought our bungalow and renovated it last year, this year it is time to work on the garden. It was mainly paved with an area covered in membrane with golden gravel surrounded by varius trees, most of which we have removed. We have had a patio laid now and want to replace the gravelled area with lawn. We…

Does anyone grow pea shoots?
I'm wondering how best to grow them, since they get cut so small. How deep would any soil need to be and could I just put vermiculite on top rather than covering the seeds with soil - I'm just hoping to keep the shoots as clean as possible so they don't get damaged washing them. Any experiences?

Small tree recomendation please
We have a Rowan tree in our front garden, the house is about 20 years old and the tree was well established when we moved in three years ago. The problem we have is that the tree is situated too close to the driveway area which it overhangs, this causes problems with the berries and the birds they attract messing over the…
