I can't think what it could be, if self seeded or recovering one I've bought last year so I'm hoping someone can enlighten me.Should it stay or should…

Accidentally broke off cherry branch - any after care to help?
Hi All,Unfortunately a small accident has just broken off one of the lowest branches on my cherry tree. Doubly annoying as it had a nice crop of cherrys coming on it. But, these things happen. Is there anything that I should do - tape, gel? Or just leave it be? Thanks

The 6 legged farmers are busy again
We seem to have got the jump on the ants this year, usually they have deposited the aphids all over the small apple trees & honeysuckle by now but a few measures early on seem to have helped us.To protect the apple tress we wrap duct tape sticky side out around the trunk ( a bit more difficult with the espalliad one as…

Multipurpose compost
I’d be interested to hear people’s views. There are loads of multipurpose composts on the market from 3 for £10 in Wilco to eye watering “premium professional” on some of the shopping channels and lots in between. We do a lot of container gardening so get through lots. Last year I bought quite a lot from Wilco for my…

I know it may seem a bit early to be thinking about this however I’m the eternal optimist and hoping to get away on holiday at some point in 2021 so starting to make plans for the garden now! I have an 8x6 greenhouse which is used solely for tomatoes. We tend (non Covid times) to be away for 2/3 weeks in both mid May and…

Multi purpose compost for houseplants?
I used to be able to buy a particular J Arthur Bowers multi purpose compost that the packaging mentioned being also suitable for use with houseplants. What should I do with my new garden?
We just bought our first family home, but neither of us have any clue about gardening, so we’re at a loss as to what to do with it. We’re not planning any major changes (except maybe building a pergola off our patio doors), we mainly just want to maintain it. What do we need to do to it to get it ready for summer? Here’s a…

Loads of spiders living under decking at back door. Any way to discourage them without harming them?
My wife has a pretty severe spider phobia. We got 2m x 4m decking installed in our garden late last summer and in recent weeks have noticed lots of small-ish spiders popping up onto the decking from underneath. It's not a swarming mass or anything but at any one time there could be around 3-5 of them on the decking so I…

Cutting back conifers myself
At the bottom of our garden we’ve got several conifers that are approximately 7 metres tall. We are happy with their height but would like to trim the spread back a little, as about 1m of foliage overhangs our seating area Aside from getting in a tree surgeon/pruning company, how else can I trim them back myself? Our…

Hide old council chicken-wire fencing for £0?
Hi, am trying to find a (very) cheap way to hide the old council chicken-wire fencing at the end of my garden. I could remove it but I'd be left with the concrete posts (which I can't physically remove. They're waist height so not huge. Last year I bought rolls of tiki bamboo straw stuff which is now on its last legs. Any…

Help please in selecting a new Espalier apple tree.
I have an existing Spartan espalier apple tree, although a prolific fruit bearer it's gradually succumbed to canker and I intend to take it out very soon. I'm looking for a dessert type tree, self pollinating and disease resistant. I intend to plant it in the same spot as where the Spartan tree is now, hopefully with fresh…

Foil in plant pots
Just a thought but a serious one.I would like to plant a deciduous small tree beside the patio for shade in summer as the heat is fierce just there. I have a number of shrubs/small trees still tiny that would do. But thought especially given the time of year, I could pot one up and move it around to see what works best or…

New Greenhouse
After my last greenhouse only lasted 6 months, next weekend I get a Rhino greenhouse put in. My question is all the plants such as tomatoes and courgettes I tried growing in the house have not worked. Will it be too late to plant seeds next weekend? Or should I give up and buy plug plants? I am in the East of Scotland.

This person probably doesn't know what they are talking about, but I don't want to take the chance. Can anyone identify them as…
