Can you identify this plant please
I saw these striking yellow flowers at RHS Wisley yesterday but didn't spot any label. Can you identify them for me?Feathery foliage, growing in dry poor soil about 4 feet or and more tall, look a bit like fennel but didn't smell like it, and too early i would have thought

What is this bird?
This bird has just made a visit to my garden - anyone know what it is? I'm useless at identifying birds and I can't decide if it's any of the birds of prey shown on the RSPB website as they all look slightly different (to me)! All I do know is that it's not any of the two types of common birds in my garden, being wood…

Small lightweight mower required
My elderly wife says we need to replace our electric cylinder lawn mower that collects grass. We've only a small grassed area, about 5yds by 3yds. I'm now faced with a decision, hover, cylinder or rotary. Ideally it will be small and lightweight. I'm much older and less able than she. Would anyone care to recommend one…

laying stepping stones
I have read you need to put down a weed membrane and cover with a layer of sand in which you embed the stones. However I want to have grasses or moss around each stone so can I just level the ground and put the stones on top of the soil?

Rose graft visible
I have a beautiful Girlguiding UK Centenary rose which I planted at least five years ago in a large pot outside my front door - there's a matching one on the other side. It blooms and blooms so wonderfully, especially when I dead-head it. Now I notice that the graft part of the stem is more visible than before, does it…

Woodlice
Can anyone elighten me. I understand that woodlice are a great insect in that they absorb toxic and radioactive chemicals in soil etc. If so that's great but I can't find out what happens to the chemicals that are absorbed in the insects body when it dies or is eaten by a bird etc.

The 6 legged farmers are busy again
We seem to have got the jump on the ants this year, usually they have deposited the aphids all over the small apple trees & honeysuckle by now but a few measures early on seem to have helped us.To protect the apple tress we wrap duct tape sticky side out around the trunk ( a bit more difficult with the espalliad one as…

Multipurpose compost
I’d be interested to hear people’s views. There are loads of multipurpose composts on the market from 3 for £10 in Wilco to eye watering “premium professional” on some of the shopping channels and lots in between. We do a lot of container gardening so get through lots. Last year I bought quite a lot from Wilco for my…

What should I do with my new garden?
We just bought our first family home, but neither of us have any clue about gardening, so we’re at a loss as to what to do with it. We’re not planning any major changes (except maybe building a pergola off our patio doors), we mainly just want to maintain it. What do we need to do to it to get it ready for summer? Here’s a…

Loads of spiders living under decking at back door. Any way to discourage them without harming them?
My wife has a pretty severe spider phobia. We got 2m x 4m decking installed in our garden late last summer and in recent weeks have noticed lots of small-ish spiders popping up onto the decking from underneath. It's not a swarming mass or anything but at any one time there could be around 3-5 of them on the decking so I…
