Identifying plants & how to look after them
Hi! Hoping someone can help me identify two plants and suggest how best to look after them :) I have a large every green hedge which has large thorns. Had it cut back last August and it’s developed a bald spot! Do we think this will grow back and when is best to trim this hedge. It grows quickly and I need to keep it off…

Rabbits in polytunnel, help needed please!
Hi, as in the title I have a problem with rabbits in my polytunnel. One, or maybe more, got in last year, they made a hole in the plastic at the side. This has now been repaired, and they can no longer get in there, unless they are moving and replacing two concrete breeze blocks. However now every time i go in there are…

Replacement for Strimmer
I need to replace a strimmer. I've always found replacing the cord very fiddly, so I've been thinking about getting one with replaceable plastic blades. I've been wondering how durable these are, and whether they are more trouble and expense than they worth. I need, for example, to cut grass against a wall, which my mower…

New slabs help
So one of my slabs got damaged all white and scraped. I priced a new monoblock drive way vs new slabs. I decided to replace the damaged slab but I’m a bit ocd about it maybe it will weather but it looked awful just leaving it. Now it looks nicer so I spend more money but the middle section is comical and can’t do anything…

autumn flowering bulbs
I was thinking as I have a grass out the front that I will just randomly plant bulbs in the grass so they come up and provide a splash of colour during the darker days of autumn/winter. They will need to survive being mowed over in spring and flower again that autumn. I was thinking crocus's but not sure what else. Thanks

What is used for rootstock for greengage?
My deceased greengage threw up a sucker from its roots begore its demise. I left it in after removing the tree and it's a pretty looking thing, shot out little leaves earlier than anything else. Trying to find out what it might be I just get adverts for trees and size types. Does anyone know what plant this might be? I…

Soil for flower beds
Hi - this might be a daft question sorry in our new place there is a large space for flower beds on the side of the garden. At the moment they are empty and filled with rubbish. I am wanting to plant some perennial flower, some conifers for privacy and also maybe a fruit and veg patch. What kind of soil do I need. The area…

Weed identification help
Hello all, Don't know if this is the right forum but here goes anyway. We moved into our new flat last November which had a new lawn laid. This month, some weeds have sprung up in the grass and are covering a lot of it. Google hasn't really identified it and worried it might be Japanese Knotweed. Google pics don't look…

Moving wisteria plants...?
We've just signed the lease on a half-allotment plot just up the road from our home; we have a 110m² plot on a site on the other side of town, which we'll be giving up later on this year as the smaller plot will be much easier to manage; I can be there in under a minute and barrow heavy stuff up there rather than needing…

Shed door jammed shut
Hi, I'm unsure if I'm on the correct board but I've got a feeling you'll be able to help me! My shed door won't open, it opens in the summer so must've expanded very slightly from the cold/ wet weather -although this is not visible. When I pull the hand, the top of the door easily comes forward but the bottom is not…

New asparagus bed
I'm making a whole new garden at the moment (the existing one was politely described as a 'blank canvas', less politely as 'bleak' with 'municipal carpark planting'). And I'm starting with the veg plot. As asparagus takes time to get going I've decided to get that in now and have ordered a selection of crowns - 17 in…

Determined attack on bad bugs ideas please
The last two summers my pixie cherry tree has had stout black bugs on all the shoots destroying the leaves and fruit - so serious sap sucking. They aren't blackfly, more sturdy. Standard bug killer briefly worked a bit but not enough. Ditto soapy water. It is only this tree but it's going to kill it as its only tiny. And…

Wilko Alternatives?
I used to use Wilko for many gardening bits and pieces including onion sets and seed potatoes and they were decent qality and good value. Mail order suppliers and many garden centres are expensive and my allotment society doesn't run a shop, so I was wondering if anybody else had seen any alternatives?

Preparing for spring!
We moved to our home in August and while we had done a fair amount of DIY and gardening work (including some repair of the poor lawn!), we cannot wait for the spring to start working in the garden! Thanks to the PictureThis app, we were able to identify a number of plants in our back garden so we know how to care for them…

Cutting Leylandii tree by a third!
I took advice last year to reduce the height of leylandii tree by a third last march and despite cutting it flat by a third it has recovered perfectly looking as if had not been cut but with the reduced size i required. Would i be getting ahead of myself to try doing this one more time to get it to my perfect reachable…
