It was given by a friend. It needs planting but it would be nice to know what it is. Any help appreciated.

Looks like it might be a Black Locust (Robinia Pseudoacacia). Does have spines on the branches ?
Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0 -
Hmm. Do we only have the leaves to go on?
Can you give us a closer shot of some?
Is there any serration to their edges?0 -
Have you thought of asking your friend what it is?
Alternatively, try a plant identification app on your smartphone.0 -
Thanks all. It was given to them by someone else.
See the attached images below.
Hopefully that helpsS

If it is, I wouldn't plant it. They send up suckers everywhere and you end up with a grove of sumach and suckers in your paving, vegetable beds, lawns...this is probably why the plant has been given away more than once0

We had one for years and the suckers were easily snapped off. They only come up where the roots are.Beautiful in the late summer when the leaves change colour. Need no attention.Best for a largish garden. Not sure it could be grown in a pot. But I have a lilac that's grown in a pot for years till I couldn't repot it any more and I'll start a new one from the suckers.
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

I have a Staghorn Sumac in a large pot on my patio - its colour is glorious in autumn. It also has vibrant pink brushes on it.
I didn't want to dig it in my garden as I'd heard they take over - I'm hoping it'll put suckers up in the pot as I think it'll look very structural!0
