Self Propelled Lawn Mower Recommendations

Hi,

I am moving house and looking for a self propelled lawn mower.

I have researched and as its a large lawn a battery powered lawn mower doesn't seem practical so looking for a petrol (unless anyone suggests otherwise)?

Looking online they suggest Hyundai is the top pick but never seen anyone have a Hyundai.

Can anyone recommend a decent self propelled lawn mower for larger gardens please?

My parents used to have a Mountfield Lawn mower but the reviews (namely on screwfix from longer term customers) do not seem that great!

I've had mountfield for last 18 years. 2 mowers in that time, both mountfield.
Run on regular petrol so no mixing two stroke oil.
    Start first time every time.
    More than happy with them.

Be careful about the grade of petrol you use. I've had to strip, clean, and rebuild the carbs on a couple of machines that had been run on E10 and then left to stand for a couple of months. The petrol gums up the jets... E5 is supposedly a bit better.
The other problem with both E5 and E10 is the ethanol that it contains attacks some plastic/rubber fuel lines, seals, and filters. Anything manufactured in the last 10 years should be OK - Check the user manual to confirm.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

I think it's only weirdo brands like the Victa from Oz that run on 2 stroke.
Some people think they have a 2 stroke, like this Mountfield owner, but so long as they haven't put 2 stroke mix in it! :#
My 1985 Honda's still going strong!

    Not buying into it.

    Don't buy Hyundai!
We still have a Hyundai self propelled petrol (orange not sure what model) The engine on ours is bullet proof but the gearbox and rear axle is made of toffee (broke after about a year) the battery start has never really worked and we've replaced the primer pump twice. Couldn't get parts from Hyundai and their customer service was shocking.
  • I have a Honda IZY (I think the model is HRG 415 SDE, not available new now) which was a refurbished (with new deck, etc) replacement for the same model bought new c. 15 years previously on which the deck had rusted away (prob partly my own fault for not cleaning regularly enough, but apparently its only major fault...). I bought the same one because the original had coped well with very heavy treatment (long wet grass, bumpy and sloping/steep surfaces with lots of protruding hidden rocks, molehills, etc) in a very large garden. The same model still appears to be available refurbished from the same seller from a well-known auction site...
  • There is a fantastic community on lawns - https://www.facebook.com/groups/623275605090418 and Hayter seem to be well received and constantly recommended.

I have a electric powered Cobra lawn mower (they have a petrol version) and thought it was fantastic. The after sales care was responsive and helpful too.

I got a Hyundai scarifier in April and it broke after 1 use and I am still waiting for it to be repaired so my impressions of Hyundai isn't great.

In the end I have gone with a Hyundai which ive used a handful of times and seems to be good. Fingers crossed, Hopefully wont have things break on it like the above posters! I did purchase it from Amazon in the hope that their CS is generally pretty good in case Hyundai don't respond or are a pain to deal with. (I purchased before I saw the most recent posts)

Fingers crossed their lawn mower is better! I did purchase the scarifier from Amazon and unfortunately the returns apply only for the first 30 days so after that you have to contact Hyundai.

So make the most of the lawn mower next 29 days! :)
