Cheaper alternatives?
I have just started using Molton Brown hand wash as I have heard it is good for dry skin. I was wondering if anybody knew of a cheaper, comparable alternative (please don't say Bayliss and Harding!). This also got me thinking - what brand swaps do you know of that really work? :) The more the better!

Opposite of thrift - what brand do you not cheap out on?
I was just wondering what brands people swear by? We are all on here to save money but sometimes the brand really is the best way to go! An example from me is Nespresso - I have started using L'or capsules for decaf, but except that Nespresso is the best blends I can find. Hoping to move onto a ground coffee espresso…

Weekly Flylady Thread 24th December
What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole task easier and quicker. We also…

Taking back control!
Hello everyone, I have noticed lately that I have totally lost the plot with meal planning and have been running out of food. I literally have no inspiration to cook anything new and am bored stiff of the same old meals, so we've been eating too much convenience food/takeaways. Please help me get my head into gear and sort…

Frugal in retirement
Hi guys OH took early retirement two years ago. I still work part time because I find I need a little structure and enjoy the extra money. We’re never going to be rich but we have a nice little flat ( it needs a few tweaks, the bathroom and kitchen both need revamping) but are ok at the moment and is where we want to be…

spiced beef help
If anyone can advise, MSEers can! I usually do a 2kg piece of spiced beef for the Boxing Day gathering - it lasts much longer (one of my favourite things!) but that's when most of it is consumed. This year, the numbers coming on Boxing Day have suddenly been reduced, there will only be 4 of us! The meat has, of course,…

Roasting advice.
Long time lurker but new poster. I have ordered a 2kg beef forerib joint for our Christmas lunch this year, I have never cooked one of these before. Does anyone have any fool-proof hints for me? Tips on a great gravy? Should I put it on a trivet type thing? Thanks in advance. Daisy.

Knitting
I am thinking of taking up Knitting, my Mum showed me how to knit many years ago, but the thought of sitting still and having to concentrate put me off. But Knitting seems to be a trendy thing to do now and having looked online at "celebrity" Knitters I have found a couple of beginners kits. I know the initial outlay is…

Haggis Bon Bons-help
I noticed that Simon Howie is doing haggis Bon bons and thought they would be a good idea as a starter for Christmas. I then decided I could make my own without bothering to read any recipes! So today I have bought a mcsween haggis from Costco and looked at recipes and noticed that they all involve deep fat frying :( Not…

Carpet Cleaning - Sodium bicarbonate vs Rubbing Alcohol
Hi, I wanted some advice on cleaning our dirty carpets, they are cream coloured and at some places mainly in the hallway they have got dark (not black), I have read about bicarbonate of soda and vinear options as well as using rubbing alchol (+ 1/2 tea spoon washing up liquid and warm water) for spray and spot clean. Has…
