Carpet Cleaning - Sodium bicarbonate vs Rubbing Alcohol

Options
Hi,

I wanted some advice on cleaning our dirty carpets, they are cream coloured and at some places mainly in the hallway they have got dark (not black), I have read about bicarbonate of soda and vinear options as well as using rubbing alchol (+ 1/2 tea spoon washing up liquid and warm water) for spray and spot clean. Has any one tried similar approach or other approaches which have worked for them and is safe and non toxic. We have two young kids and want to avoid toxic options.

i also have some specific questions

1. For removing odour i want to use bicarbonate of soda but reading on forums some say that it can break you vaccume {clog up HEPA filter or worst block the motor/suction mechanism}, also the bicarbonate is not fully removed and can result in faster thinning of carpets as the powder is very rough tiny particles.

2. Will it be safe to use on mattress to deodourise them.

3. Has anyone used Isopropyl alcholol (rubbing alcohol) for carpet cleaning, does it really work or can it damage carpet or underlay ?. I am planning to make a cleaning solution and use this in my vax carpet cleaner.

many thanks

Why not use the solution designed to go into your Vax Carpet Cleaner? It sounds a shedload safer than messing about with home potions that'll give you a highly flammable floor covering for the first vacuuming afterwards.

Bicarb would be fine on a mattress, though. Make a barely damp paste for spot treating, sweep off the excess, leave to dry completely and brush off.

Sounds like it might be a good idea to invest in a runner and doormat inside the front door and some mattress protectors on the beds, though.
